Better academics combined with more fun is the goal.

I consider it my duty to do what it takes to make the tutoring FUN for the person being tutored.
I have helped friends (and their children) to prepare for exams since when in high school I won various awards for my performance on exams. I won the top score for the Regents exam for Duval County in 1971 and for this I was recognized by the downtown Rotary Club. Also I won the top statewide scholarship award for the Chamber of Commerce and for the N.H.S. due to performance on exams. Also I won the Merit Scholarship award. I have only recently started to do tutoring for pay. Over the years I have helped my children, my grandchildren, and friends and others to prepare for exams ranging from kindergarten phonics up to and beyond SAT exams.

When a student needs tutoring, there is a breakdown in the understanding of the subject. As a teacher, I find out the individual student’s thinking process and make it click for that particular subject. Quite often it is just a small portion of the process that is missing or the process does not make sense to the student. Breaking down the process step by step and using examples makes it easier for the student to get to the correct end results and understand how he or she got there. Understanding is the key.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am currently completing my internship for my Music Education degree from the University of North Florida. I am specializing in teaching elementary age students and I have already completed two pre-internships for my degree in elementary schools. During my degree I had the opportunity to tutor elementary students in reading at Woodland Acres Elementary. I conducted my two pre-internships at Joseph Finnegan and John E. Ford elementary schools. I worked as a substitute teacher in Duval county for the springs semester of 2008. I have experience in low-income schools and I have seen the need these students have for extra attention.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have an intuitive grasp of what an instructor is trying to accomplish. As a result I know how to target the key concepts in a way that combines the key ideas with peripheral ideas to produce not only a better grade, but a better understanding of the material. As a father I know children are quick learners and absorb information very readily but only when it suits them. Therefore I tailor my approach to be as individualized as possible resulting in a one-on-one style that encourages and promotes success through learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

Each student engages homework in a different way. For example, some with a lackadaisical approach, some with a sense of being overwhelmed, some that are missing fundamentals and some unable to self-check. The one thing all students have in common: the desire to learn is in their minds. It may be pushed aside, but all students feel the power of knowledge. I am very friendly and tolerant, yet straightforward. I am clear about responsibilities and expectations. I won't waste anyone's time, nor take a paycheck for accomplishing nothing. I can communicate in a simple way the circumstances of a situation and make insightful assessments on student's work.

A Little Bit About Me...

Well, teaching one or a small group is quite different from teaching large classes. When tutoring, it's especially important to be a good listener and observer, to help pinpoint the student's needs and target areas to strenghten. When I see a student "getting it" (absorbing a new concept or mastering something for the first time) I do feel satisfaction. I do have patience, and I relate well to establish a rapport with students.

My teaching style is predicated on the belief that children truly want to learn. I like to introduce the goal or goals for today. Ask a few questions regarding ysterdays assignment and see if the class will bridg the two by itself. I believe that a class os students wiling to learn need only slight direction each day. I always have a full lesson plan in tow, but i find the class rarely needs me to rely on it. The students' hunger for knowledge always seems to be motivation enough to keep them moving forward through the blackboard jungle.
I have always been a tutor looking back. My friends were always asking for help with their homework. I enjoyed helping them. For the last 25 years, I taught mathematics in grades 7-12 in central New York near Syracuse before I moved to Jacksonville. Although my focus has been math, I like to focus on study skills that best fit the learning style of the individual student, whether it is math or English or Social Studies. I also spent 3 years at Colgate University as a User Services Consultant in the Computer Laboratory. That title meant it was my responsibility to work with students on their resumes, cover letters, job applications and on any computer software that we supported. I definitely had to be flexible and knowledgeable in many areas!
I have always taught math with an interdisciplinary team of teachers, so I get a perspective of "the entire kid." That way, if a student was not learning in my math class room, I looked for ways that made that student successful in other subjects that I could use ... read more
