Better academics combined with more fun is the goal.

I have helped friends (and their children) to prepare for exams since when in high school I won various awards for my performance on exams. I won the top score for the Regents exam for Duval County in 1971 and for this I was recognized by the downtown Rotary Club. Also I won the top statewide scholarship award for the Chamber of Commerce and for the N.H.S. due to performance on exams. Also I won the Merit Scholarship award. I have only recently started to do tutoring for pay. Over the years I have helped my children, my grandchildren, and friends and others to prepare for exams ranging from kindergarten phonics up to and beyond SAT exams.
I consider it my duty to do what it takes to make the tutoring FUN for the person being tutored.

I believe the best style of teaching is to show and walk through several different ways to solve a problem. Let the student find their favorite way to solve the problem and move from there. This method has been successful in my lessons in the past. This way the student has a basic understanding of several methods of problem solving and a basic mastery of one method.
My tutoring experience took place in college. I tutored algebra 1, pre calculus, and calculus 1. I tutored about 6 students in total. Other experience I have is running a basketball camp for elementary and middle school aged children. This included teaching and coaching children a variety of skills in 1 on 1 and group settings.

A Little Bit About Me...

I began tutoring during my final year in college. I have always been good at math and I decided to help out a few of my fellow students who were having difficulty in their various classes. Part of the reason I did this was because I was considering moving on to get my BA in education and I wanted a taste of what teaching was all about. I discovered that tutoring was an amazingly fulfilling thing. I felt as though I were making a real difference in their education.
I don't believe that any student is incapable of learning anything. It is true that sometimes certain students have great difficulty with concepts that other students grasp easily. I believe this is due more to the way the concept is taught to the student and how much interest the student has in the subject, than to whether the student is "smart". An effective teacher must be capable of learning their student in ord ... read more

I most enjoy working with middle and high school students. Usually, they are able to break down complex problems and think abstractly. When I work one on one with a student I am patient to understand where they are in relation to their struggle in comprehending a particular concept. I tend to go back and break down the concepts into singular parts and go through each step with the student so that it will later stick with them. Encouraging them along the way and celebrating their understanding of each step in the process boosts their confidence to further complete the problem, or task, at hand.

A Little Bit About Me...

After receiving my first bachelor degree in Avionics Engineering Technology I was very much driven to seek my second bachelors in Electrical Engineering. This made me gain a lot of experience in the various fields of science. I have tutored students in Math, Physics, Chemistry, Organic, Biology, Computer Science and even Anatomy and Physiology.
I very much enjoy breaking down complex ideas into very simple ones for students to understand. Each student is unique in the way they learn.I try to accommodate that by changing the way i can explain things so that each individual students can grasp the concepts very easily and retain the information for a longer period of time. Also incorporating real life examples makes in more interesting and "useful".

A Little Bit About Me...

I taught in a classroom for one year as a teacher. I have taught title 1 for 3rd and 4th grade for one year. I have subtaught for about 3 to 4 years. I have tutored for about 11 years in all levels of math and basic reading.
I am a visiual learner but I understand that all students learn differently. So, I like to change the way I teach to the needs of the student and constantly turning the tables of their questions with questions that make them think and answer for themselves. I can read and write upside down very fluently and I believe this helps the students understanding. I have been voted teacher of the month continuously and students request me by name frequently. I currently work in a tutoring center where I work with 3 on 1. I try to make the student comforable and wants to work as well as enjoys it. More About This Tutor...

I have always taught math with an interdisciplinary team of teachers, so I get a perspective of "the entire kid." That way, if a student was not learning in my math class room, I looked for ways that made that student successful in other subjects that I could use in my teaching. Although my major for both my Bachelors' degree and Masters' degree was mathematics education, I enjoy working with students in other subjects, focusing on their strengths. I feel that in order for a student to be successful in any subject, they have to like the subject first. I have a great sense of humor and often used that in my class room for students to enjoy school in general and math in particular!
For the last 25 years, I taught mathematics in grades 7-12 in central New York near Syracuse before I moved to Jacksonville. Although my focus has been math, I like to focus on study skills that best fi ... read more
