A Little Bit About Me...

I have always been a driven student, especially in math and sciences. I first discovered my passion for teaching when my high school friends started asking me to help explain chemistry problems. Later in high school, I tutored my first student in chemistry. I continued my scientific education in college and graduate school, earning a BS, MS, and PhD (2008) in chemistry. During graduate school, I served as a teaching assistant, helping professors in undergraduate chemistry courses by providing close student interaction. Informal for large groups as I wanted the students to see me as like them, but with enough capability to inspire them to listen. I learned early on you cannot make anybody learn anything. You must inspire them to want to learn. At the 1-on-1 setting (tutoring level), I work at a very detailed level with the particular student I have with me at the time. Each one is sufficiently different to warrant different teaching approaches to maximum effect and retention.
During my Doctoral candidate years, I worked as both a engineering lecturer and laboratory instructor for 3 different engineering fields. The fields were circuit design, applied mathematics and practical laboratory equipment usage. Subject material can be confusing and very intimidating. I speak from experience. When I tutor students, I ask where they feel they need the most help and where they are doing well, to help them with their uncertainties and increase their confidence. Instead of just giving the students the answers, I will show them where to find the answers. Once the student works out the problem with I, I instruct the student to try a similar problem without my help, to deepen their grasp of the material, and to show them they can do it.
