My comments on tutoring Elementary Math : I am currently tutoring a student who will be in 4th grade. I'm teaching him various strategies to help him understand, primarily, multiplication and division, but also other important topics, such as telling time and skip counting. He makes a little bit of progress every day towards understanding the concepts, as well as memorizing his basic facts.

I have been tutoring students for about 5 years. I started when I was a junior in high school. My first experiences tutoring were through the National Honor Society. I volunteered after school once or twice per week and I tutored mainly ESL students in Math and English. My senior year of high school and throughout the time I was in college, I tutored a high school student who had educational and developmental deficits. He needed help in all of his core classes from 8th grade through 12th grade. I tutored him in Pre-Algebra through Algebra II, History, Science, and English. I also tutored at Columbia Heights High School for 6 months, conducting tutorials for groups of 6-7 students. I believe that every person has an optimal way in which they learn. Ideas that seem complicated can be made easy by simply changing the way in which it is presented. At college level, I lecture, write on the chalk board, give handouts, give and grade class and home assignments, and provide where necessary, one on one tutoring supported with several examples. At lower level tutoring, I follow any official guidelines provided or I listen to student's or students' problems to determine the weak points where they need help and I then work with the student(s) after developing an appropriate strategy for helping the student(s).
