I taught emergency response classes for the American Red Cross before going back to college. I then taught English composition classes, and I tutored in the university writing center for two years. Presently, I teach Intensive English for International Students at the University of Northern Colorado, including grammar, reading, vocabulary, computer skills, writing, and speaking/listening classes.
I believe education should be fun and that students learn better when they are in a relaxed environment. Humor, praise, patience, and encouragement are essential to good learning.

My experience in paid teaching (excluding numerous volunteer and non-paid opportunities) range from teaching Vietnamese refugee "boat-people" children (news film footage archived by Vanderbilt University) in 1975 through years of Orange County (CA) adult education in English as a Second Language to my present duties in metro Denver of teaching immigrant adults in English as a Second Language. A Little Bit About Me...

Each time I have taught a different age-level I have sought to accommodate myself to the learning style of that particular level, whether psychokinetic for kindergarten and preschool, audio-visual for lower elementary, or verbal-phonemic for upper-level students and adults. It was in the teaching of adults that I encountered my most challenging situations, and even today the pedagogy is not nearly as simple as would appear at face-value. Reference to Ken Pike's tomes on the fundamentals of tagmemics, James Stanfield's affective pointers for students of various emotional statuses, and even the philosophy of Noam Chomsky on English deep structure, were all consulted early and often and at one time or another throughout my career.
