I started teaching while in college; I worked as a Teaching Assistant when school was in session (teaching college students) and as a camp counselor at a French immersion camp in the summers. This allowed me to work with students ages 8-22 and to develop different teaching styles for different ages. Each time I have taught a different age-level I have sought to accommodate myself to the learning style of that particular level, whether psychokinetic for kindergarten and preschool, audio-visual for lower elementary, or verbal-phonemic for upper-level students and adults. It was in the teaching of adults that I encountered my most challenging situations, and even today the pedagogy is not nearly as simple as would appear at face-value. Reference to Ken Pike's tomes on the fundamentals of tagmemics, James Stanfield's affective pointers for students of various emotional statuses, and even the philosophy of Noam Chomsky on English deep structure, were all consulted early and often and at one time or another throughout my career.
