With so many years of experience, I have watched educational trends come and go and come back again! My own style is simple and has served me well with all levels: discover the student's passion and build on it through reading, writing, research, and talking to him/her. I have never worked with a student who doesn't want to learn. Resistance is usually fear of failure. I love the challenge of figuring out how each student learns.
My teaching experience has been diverse. I have taught fifth grade through college level, and I have taught in different areas of English: grammar, writing, literature, speech, reading,etc. I have tutored elementary students in reading and writing. I am very adaptive. I accept challenges warmly. I love working with children; I teach at my church at the elementary level weekly. I also enjoy working with adults in a non-threatening way. I am a patient person and know that learning can be fun if presenting correctly.
I have recently retired from the U.S. Army as a medic. During my service, I was frequently responsible for both formal and informal teaching and training. Three teachers impacted my life not only as a result of the content of their classes but in their delivery. All three approached learning as an adventure. Even though the topics ranged from sixth grade mathematics to fluid dynamics each teacher keyed their presentation on the reception of the students. If the first presentation didn’t get the topic across an alternative presentation was made, often in a humorous vein. Students were never allowed to feel inadequate. Many of the students I trained were sent by their employers. So often, the student’s frame of mind wasn’t the most open to the learning experience.
