My comments on tutoring Latin : Taught and tutored Latin I and II for 10-plus years

I believe that all students can and will achieve academic success given appropriate instruction; i.e., instruction that is differentiated according to students' specific needs, learning styles, interests, and personal goals. As a classroom teacher and as a personal tutor, I have seen almost miraculous results in a relatively short period of time, both in terms of academic achievement and student confidence. Passion and enthusiasm for learning is contagious, and I am a carrier. For a dedicated instructor, nothing is more satisfying than watching a student "catch" the learning bug.

After completing my undergraduate degree in English Literature at Florida State University, I worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County for two years. In 2009, I completed my Master's Degree in Communication at University of South Florida while simultaneously employed at the Department of Special Education. I have been tutoring with Advanced Learners for 1 year and am currently an Adjunct Instructor of Public Speaking at HCC Dale Mabry.
Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.

When I discovered how much I enjoy teaching I prepared myself to launch a second career. I earned a second degree and have almost completed my M.A. in History at USF. along the way, I have taught Latin and History to a wide variety of students from the sixth grade to college students. The best way I learned to study was to see the information visually in a repetitive manner and practice many problems. However, I know that children are different in the ways they study; some may need an auditory or hands on approach and not just visual. A Little Bit About Me...

My favorite part of tutoring/teaching is the moment when you can see the proverbial "lightbulb" go off in a students mind. The moment they begin to understand whatever it is you are teaching is such a rewarding experience for me. I wouldn't say I have a set method for tutoring, I gauge an individual's learning style as I get to know their academic strengths and weaknesses and I adapt my teaching methods to fit their specific needs.

I'm a journalist by trade. My love of writing began at an early age.
