Genetics is one of my top subjects!

I have a year of experience working as a Peer Facilitator at New Mexico State University where I was responsible for grading papers, tutoring, facilitating biology workshops, and hosting exam review sessions for lower level undergraduate biology courses. I am a great tutor because I use my experiences as a student to relate to the students that I am tutoring and encourage them to learn from my mistakes. I try to create a light, relaxed learning environment and encourage students to practice and participate as much as a possible. I also strive to help students build confidence in the subject as well as confidence in their own personal abilities.
Relaxed but hands-on. I ask students to do a lot of practice to familiarize themselves with the subject/topic at hand while providing lots of support.

Fun, visual and very interactive!
I am currently a senior studying Biology and Chemistry at the University of New Mexico. While attending the University I have informally tutored dozens of people. I love to study the sciences by talking and interacting with others. My focus in my education has been microbiology, specifically genetics, however I have learning experience in all fields of biology as well as physics and upper level mathematics. I prefer to deal with middle school to high school students in my work due to my experience running camps and youth groups for these age groups.

My comments on tutoring Genetics : Punnett squares, dominant, recessive, genotype, phenotype, crossing over, nucleotides - the words alone could get you. I enjoy the puzzles you can solve with knowledge of genetics, and I have excellent tools to help students learn about the dazzle of genes.

Teaching middle school and high school science from 1983 to 2004, including every science subject listed in the TutorSelect list. I have worked as an educational consultant for national science laboratories, helping them train their scientists to work better in the school classrooms where they volunteer. I have worked for museums and for outdoor education programs, but have found the most satisfaction as a classroom teacher with all kinds of students. I have worked teaching teachers, but they were very difficult students.

The combination of a Master's Degree in Molecular and Cell Biology and an undergraduate major in Psychology and minors in Biology and Chemistry along with many years of research experience in biology provide me with a well rounded background in math and science. My specific tutoring experiences began as an undergraduate where I tutored other students in courses I had completed such as: general chemistry, organic chemistry, genetics, general biology and psychology. A Little Bit About Me...

One of the most rewarding aspects about guiding students is finding the way they channel their thoughts and using it to their advantage. As a result of being ADHD, I am sympathetic to the struggles many students have to concentrate and as a result I am a tenacious but patient teacher, always determined to make the lesson fun and interesting as well as educational. I choose to live by example, just as my favorite teachers and professors did with me. I give children respect, boost their confidence and make them love what they are doing. Even though I have found my approach to be successful, I am always looking for new ways to engage the mind of my student. As a tutor, I provide goals for the children. My two and half years of teaching math and physics in high school as well as 8 years of college teaching taught me a great deal about encouraging learning. I also believe that my ability to communicate makes me especially well suited to help students achieve academically. My experiences dramatically improved and expanded my communication skills since I was constantly meeting new people and discussing different topics.
