Genetics is one of my top subjects!

I have a year of experience working as a Peer Facilitator at New Mexico State University where I was responsible for grading papers, tutoring, facilitating biology workshops, and hosting exam review sessions for lower level undergraduate biology courses. I am a great tutor because I use my experiences as a student to relate to the students that I am tutoring and encourage them to learn from my mistakes. I try to create a light, relaxed learning environment and encourage students to practice and participate as much as a possible. I also strive to help students build confidence in the subject as well as confidence in their own personal abilities.

I am currently a senior studying Biology and Chemistry at the University of New Mexico. While attending the University I have informally tutored dozens of people. I love to study the sciences by talking and interacting with others. My focus in my education has been microbiology, specifically genetics, however I have learning experience in all fields of biology as well as physics and upper level mathematics. My comments on tutoring Genetics : Punnett squares, dominant, recessive, genotype, phenotype, crossing over, nucleotides - the words alone could get you. I enjoy the puzzles you can solve with knowledge of genetics, and I have excellent tools to help students learn about the dazzle of genes.

Multiple ways of presenting material; musically, visually, building models, finding answers by testing a hypothesis; experimenting, measuring, observing, seeing, touching.
Teaching middle school and high school science from 1983 to 2004, including every science subject listed in the TutorSelect list. I have worked as an educational consultant for national science laboratories, helping them train their scientists to work better in the school classrooms where they volunteer. I have worked for museums and for outdoor education programs, but have found the most satisfaction as a classroom teacher with all kinds of students. I have worked teaching teachers, but they were very difficult students.

A Little Bit About Me...

My two and half years of teaching math and physics in high school as well as 8 years of college teaching taught me a great deal about encouraging learning. I also believe that my ability to communicate makes me especially well suited to help students achieve academically.
