I graduated from IUP with a degree in Biology Education. I am certified in Biology and Middle School Science. I taught for one semester at Central Bucks School District where I taught Academic Biology, Astronomy and Oceanography. I then taught two years at Gateway School District where I taught 8th grade physical science. I now have a permanent position at Yough School District where I teach 7th grade Life Science. I am also currently pursuing my Masters in Education.
The purpose of my teaching is to allow every student to succeed. I will try any way possible to reach this goal for every child. Working in the sciences, I feel that inquiry learning is important and hands-on experience is essential. Each student has their own way of learning best and I try to find that learning style and use it whenever possible.

I have experience teaching many types of students. I worked one-on-one, daily, with an autistic student during my last position, so I understand that not every student learns in the same way. I think it works well to give shorter lessons to a small group, and then work individually with the students. I like to encourage them to help one another if they feel confident in the subject. I pay great attention to verifying that each student is following the lesson. My main teaching style is "I do, you do," meaning I show them how to do a problem, or spell a word, and then they show me how. I like to work with the parent and child on any goals they have for the year, while updating the parent and child on progress, problems, and behavior.
I have been working with preschool to high school age students since 2004. I have always had tutoring positions, whether it was for my peers in college, ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been selected as a peer tutor through Carlow University for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.

While attending the University of Pittsburgh I was able to experience my fielf studies and a year student teaching oppportunity at New England Elementary (West Mifflin PA). After school I was instructional assistant at McKeesport School District. This year I was a substitute teacher for Norwin, Penn-Trafford, Yough, and McKeesport School District.
I always believe that the student can learn just as much from, or even more from, each other. Not just from the teacher alone. Allowing students to share their own personal experiences, knowledge, interest, goals, and opinions in the classroom in a wonderful way for students to learn and grow, as well as for me. I have already experienced this from my field studies, student teaching, tutoring, instructional assisting, and volunteer work. I will strive to make my classroom fun, yet structured. I will exemplify my enthusiasm and love f ... read more

I my experience in learning and teaching anatomy, which revolves around learning concepts as well as brute memorization, each student, has learned in his or her own unique way. Because of this I feel it is hard to describe my "teaching style." One aspect of teaching that I feel I am very successful in understands each students learning style and being able to adapt to it. I consider myself a very patient and understanding person and never feel that I place "pressure" on students. I personally believe that a person learns better if they are in a comfortable situation.
I began my teaching experience at Ohio University where I was offered a position as an anatomy TA due to my success in the course. During this time I was required to make sure that 30+ students had a clear understanding of both lecture material and the lab material which included complete cat dissection. After I r ... read more

I have always been raised as a stellar student. The focus on education in my parents home was considered the only choice. I graduated top 10% of my high school class and went onto medical school overseas as I had moved back to Pakistan my native country. I than returned to the USA and passed the hardest test on the planet which is the ECFMG equivalency exams for doctors. I went into medical research after that and than teaching. I have been teaching for over a year at the CCAC college. I teach biology and antomy/physiology. I need summer employment and I would love to tutor students.
I usually follow the curriculum assigned. But I employ the socratic method as well as questioning each fact I teach. I also tie in clinical correlations to make it more interesting. I have found my students repond well to me and like me as a professor and I spend some time tutoring my students at CCAC ... read more

The most challenging aspect of teaching comes from the many different styles in which students acquire information. While some students benefit more from a hands-on approach, others are better served by visualizations/illustrations, while still others learn best by repetition of material. I have always approached students with an open mind, allowing them to help me understand what it is they need to learn materials in an efficient manner. As such, as an instructor, I try to incorporate many different approaches to the materials, in the hope that I will reach as many students as possible. While my teaching experience in the classroom has been limited, I look forward to continuing to teach/tutor to increase my understanding of the many ways that people learn, which provides me with new challenges to overcome.

I am passionate about encouraging young people to achieve and surpass their full potential academically and personally. My experience as a Young Life Leader has given me the joy of mentoring high school students for 5 years. I have taught students ranging from different levels of Gardner's Multiple Intelligences as well as varying socioeconomic status. I welcome the challenge of meeting the educational needs of individual students. I believe that all students can be successful in math and it is my desire to see them achieve that level of success to gain self-confidence. I prefer the discovery method in my teaching style because it gives students a foundation and allows them to build upon it. I strive to develop a mutual respect for all of my students because I am a firm believer that they will not care how much I know, unless they know how much I care.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have noticed a couple things in my years tutoring people in math. I have noticed that many people have trouble with the fundamental concepts of fractions, decimals, order of operations, and adding/subtracting positive and negative numbers. If a student does not have these concepts together much of the 'higher level' mathematics can seem a blur and highly confusing. I have also noticed that students like real world or relevant examples when learning a new math concept. I like to find out what my student is into and tailor problems to things that affect their every day life. Practical real world examples can significantly increase a students retainment of concepts. I also make it a point to keep the learning environment positive and upbeat.
