In teaching I am basically a generalist and humanist. My background is in mathematics and the sciences, but with a solid foundation in the humanities. Practically, I have never stopped learning something new and in addition to my formal credential I have done university course work in languages, forestry, animal husbandry, and sports training. My philosophy for effective education is comprised of six components creativity, character, culture, civic capacity, shared governance and student centeredness. I believe student centeredness is the trunk and the other components are the branches. Each component is connected to the other and they share common characteristics. For me teaching is about making the connection for students between the literature, writing, piece of art or media and their lives. During college I worked for NMSU and CYFD providing two types of tutoring services. With NMSU I worked with fellow college students in classes that I previously passed, which mainly included Accounting and Math. With CYFD I worked with young mothers trying to obtaining their GED. I helped create good study habits and tutored them in all areas included in the GED; Social Studies, Math, Language Arts, and Science. While in college I took several communication classes which had presentations in front of 100 or more students. I took intermediate algebra along with statistics and business calculus. I believe that listening is a key to helping a student succeed in a subject matter that may not come easily to them. Building on a child's strengths and trying to find a "way in" that makes sense to them is a good strategy.
