Because of this, I spent many hours throughout college volunteering to tutor calculus and chemistry students. During my last two years of college, I worked as a chemistry teaching assistant, a position that allowed me to teach chemistry to groups of 25 college students. As evidence of my effectiveness and clarity in teaching, I won four undergraduate teaching awards during this period. I feel that repetition is one key that helps students grasp difficult concepts. I start by helping the student understand what the question is asking. Then I will do a problem step by step, showing the student what I am doing. Next, I will have the student do the same problem, but recreate the steps that I had shown them, guiding them along the way. After this type of practice, we will move on to similar problems, using the same steps that we previously used. I have found that this system helps me learn the information and retain it. I will be patient because I understand that these concepts do not come easily. My teaching style can be easily adapted to meet the student’s needs.
