I have a passion for teaching others and spreading my knowledge- I enjoy not only helping a student to understand, but to also become a mentor. Giving a student the answer does not facilitate their learning. My style of tutoring and teaching is to reinforce the basics, ask leading questions and give examples that assist the student discover the correct answers for him or herself.
While substitute teaching various subjects, I discovered my hidden talent – making math understandable for youth. My other gifts include excellent grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. I don’t have a teacher’s certificate, however, and am currently choosing not to substitute, but I miss the personal interaction with students who want to learn.

A Little Bit About Me...

What I have discovered about myself is that I learn differently from other people. I am the kind of person who prefers to set aside that assembly instruction manual and put together that Christmas toy by laying out the pieces in an orderly fashion. There is so much pleasure in problem solving. I learn by asking myself questions. I have little patience for mundane drills and memorization if they can be avoided. Each child is different. It is meaningless to say that a child is intelligent. There are many kinds of intelligences. Some children are more intelligent in memorization. Others are intelligent in solving problems. I love working with children and young adults. My challenge as a tutor is to take something that is difficult and make it fun and understandable. Too often students look at teachers or adults as enemies, and I try to take a very laid-back, conversational approach when tutoring. In May of 2010, I received my BS in Biological Sciences from the University of South Carolina. In addition, I have a cognate in Landform Geography. I hold a Academic Grade Point Average of 3.887/4.0, and I am a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.
