I have a passion for teaching others and spreading my knowledge- I enjoy not only helping a student to understand, but to also become a mentor. While substitute teaching various subjects, I discovered my hidden talent – making math understandable for youth. My other gifts include excellent grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. I don’t have a teacher’s certificate, however, and am currently choosing not to substitute, but I miss the personal interaction with students who want to learn.
Giving a student the answer does not facilitate their learning. My style of tutoring and teaching is to reinforce the basics, ask leading questions and give examples that assist the student discover the correct answers for him or herself.

A Little Bit About Me...

What I have discovered about myself is that I learn differently from other people. I am the kind of person who prefers to set aside that assembly instruction manual and put together that Christmas toy by laying out the pieces in an orderly fashion. There is so much pleasure in problem solving. I learn by asking myself questions. I have little patience for mundane drills and memorization if they can be avoided. Each child is different. It is meaningless to say that a child is intelligent. There are many kinds of intelligences. Some children are more intelligent in memorization. Others are intelligent in solving problems. A Little Bit About Me...

I do not have current experience teaching or tutoring for pay. I did some tutoring of high school students and fellow classmates while I was in college. Since then, I have been the "go-to" person in my family for help with math and science. I tutored one of my sisters in her classes at St Charles Community College. She graduated with an Associates degree in AutoCAD last year. I helped her with all her cad, math, physics, and engineering classes. From 2002 thru 2008, I tutored one of my nieces through her junior high and high school math and science classes. I love working with children and young adults. My challenge as a tutor is to take something that is difficult and make it fun and understandable. Too often students look at teachers or adults as enemies, and I try to take a very laid-back, conversational approach when tutoring. Many college freshmen struggle with Biology 101. While some universities have services to students, not all institutions are fortunate enough to give their students free access to tutoring. Therefore, I believe that it is important to set a solid foundation for the sciences in both middle and high school levels.
