Dyslexia is one of my top subjects! I have had advanced training to work with children with dyslexia and received my Orton-Gillingham certification. I have worked in a center for children with this disability.

We work hard in my sessions but we also laugh a lot. I provide plenty of praise and positive reinforcement and celebrate even the smallest improvement.
I have worked with children experiencing reading difficulties for many years and have specialized training in multiple advanced reading techniques. I have tutored in a center for children with dyslexia and am currently working part time in an elementary school with first and second graders struggling with reading. I am dyslexic myself, but was not diagnosed until college. I remember too well the shame and frustration of not being able to read. Dyslexia does not go away, but I have learned many ways to work around it. I work to make children understand that their reading problems are not their fault, and that together we can overcome the barriers in their way.

More About This Tutor...

I possess a very eclectic and kinesthetic teaching style. I believe that children learn best when as many senses as possible are used in teaching them. When a child sees, hears, touches, smells, and sometimes tastes what they are learning, their brains are using multiple connections to hardwire whatever you are trying to teach them, therefore they will be more apt to remember than if taught by rote. I also believe that it's necessary to think about their physical, intellectual, emotional, and social well-being while they are learning. Children need to move. They will not retain as much information if they are not given breaks in routine at least every 15 to 20 minutes. Their intellect needs to be stimulated, they will not retain information they believe to be irrelevant. Therefore, it is our job as educators to show them how they can apply what they learn to their everyday environm ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I taught public school in Florida from K-12 for the last 16 years. I taught for more than 10 years in the private school. I am still teaching part-time at a private company. My passion for teaching and the diverse subjects and levels of students that I have taught are two of my great assets that can be very useful in the tutoring profession. I teach to help my student reach his or her highest potential.
Depending on the subject I use a highly academic and focussed style of teaching. If it is communication like English, Writing and Journalism , I use a lot of teacher-generated materials. I am very flexible and would like to meet the needs of a particular student by administering some kind of a skill inventory survey to identify his or her style of learning. An inventory of his interests and skills will also be a good tool for me to assess the student's strength ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My experience in education has taken many paths. I began my teaching as an elementary school teacher. I thought third gradein a Catholic elementary school and began the first Kindergarten program at that school. Along my path I have also taught Social Studies and was in charge of the Library at an inner city school in Miami. There have been many turns in my teaching experience, but, the most satisfying teaching challenge is the one I have undertaken as a teacher for children with learning disabilities. I have been with a school called Dreams Are Free and we educate students who have a variety of learning disabilities. I consider my being able to teach my class a privilege and I learn from my students just as much as they learn from me.

I love helping students succeed. I believe all students are capable of academic success. However, I have come to learn that learning styles differ greatly and to be an effective tutor it is imperative to analyze the student and find the most effective tutoring style that suits his or her learning style. My goal is to improve results through patience, hard-work, and confidence building. I believe a good educator can make a world of difference in any child's education. I strive to make a difference in all of my students' lives.
