In my experience, most students under perform in science and math due to the an inability to relate theses subjects to practical real life examples. Connecting chemistry and physics principles with analogous real life examples is the key for students to become both interested and proficient in these subjects. When a student gains an appreciation for a subject, it will certainly be reflected in by their grades.

Because I enjoy and see the wonder in science and I like to show that to students. If they see a reason to want the knowledge, and see how it can expand their horizons, then they will be more open to learning. A common problem with individuals needing tutoring is that they sometimes do not think they have the "smarts" to learn the subject. My first objective is to show them they have the "stuff" to get it! Then I show them how it can be fun. This needs to be balanced with the practical need to get passing grades and complete the course work. I obtained a B.S. in engineering from Webb Institute in 1968, entered the U.S. Coast Guard and thereafter obtained a JD in Law from SUNY, Buffalo. I tutored underclassmen in calculus while at Webb and taught seventh and eighth grade math and science in a small catholic school, part time, while in law school. Following law school I was a prosecutor for six years after which I became a hearing officer for NYS OCFS. I retired from state service about one year ago, at age sixty-two. My education consists of a Bachelors of Arts degree in chemistry, with a minor in biology and significant field experience in academic research in both fields. My inaugural teaching experience was as an HEOP tutor for introductory physics. I have been a freelance tutor for organic chemistry for over a year, and have tutored Regents chemistry as well, and have volunteered my services to fellow students for two and a half years.
I prefer a “vertically integrated” teaching style. Science is a continuum, with complex topics being reducible to simple concepts. I will work with a student to break down difficult topics that are already problematic, and help them synthesize concepts into an integrated whole as new topics arise.
