I fundamentally believe anyone can learn. If a student isn’t grasping a concept, it just means I have to change my style of teaching. So what is my teaching style…anything that helps a student achieve his or her potential. But the one thing I teach all my students is how to find their learning style. I have a passion for teaching but waited until I gained some "real world" experience. I found that this has helped me relate to my students since I am able to make meaningful connections to their learning. I like to discover what my students already know about the topic and to expose any misconceptions. Brainstorming activities work well for me. I like to help define the topic in common terms, not the classic dictionary method. I use presentation, discussion, videos and hands on activities. Most of what I do is inquiry based.

As an undergraduate at MIT, I have a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, and have complete master of those taught at the high school level. I have also completed several advanced courses in chemistry, biology, and physics, but am still young enough to remember the techniques I used to learn those subjects when I myself was a high school student. I have prepared many students (privately) for final exams in biology, geometry, and algebra. I have a knack for creating analogies and mechanisms to help students remember things for exams, as well as strategies and ways of thinking that may be a little different than what was taught in class (but still gets them to the final result). I really want to help kids succeed in school and be in charge of their learning even after I am no longer their tutor. I like to inspire them to learn.

My passion is making mathematics accessible. After high school I was underwhelmed by mathematics. However as I took more math in college, I realized how much I had missed in high school. As I learned more mathematics, I became determined to make it my business to find and implement better methods of educating people on mathematics in a way that does not overwhelm them, but simultaneously makes their learning experience more useful. I studied teacher education as an undergraduate, and attended graduate school at Dartmouth where the program in mathematics has a specific focus on preparing one to teach mathematics. I began my professional career in land surveying. After the birth of my two sons I revised my goals toward an educational experience at the elementary level. I completed my practicum in Elementary Education and performed a year of substitute teaching in both the elementary and middle school levels. Since that time I went on to complete a secondary degree in mathematics with a certification in secondary level education.
