I feel that the relationship formed between tutor and student is as important as the information being taught. A sincere concern for people is the foundation for successful and influential teaching. I gladly spent extra time planning an English lesson if it allowed the student to connect better with the material. I first assess the child's knowledge (test them) and their study routine. Following, I create an individualized plan of study for him/her. What material does the child enjoy? How would he/she like to study? My goal is to create a fun learning environment therefore the child retains the information and wants to continue to learn. Games, pneumonic, songs, dice, cards, etc. are a part of my teaching style.
I tutored a 10 year boy in all subjects for about 2 years Monday through Friday which was a fantastic experience; he is now at Baylor University in Texas. I substituted 5th and 6th grade and tutored one-on-one students whom required additional assistance. I recently tutored the FCAT curriculum to students ages 8-15 as well as foreign students and a child with ADHD. The positive feedback from the parents and students has made this position enjoyable.
