Chess is one of my top subjects! I am a chess expert and experienced tournament player who has won state titles several times. I also have been teaching individuals and school chess clubs for over 20 years. Generally considered one of the best chess teachers in MN.

I am near master strength (expert USCF) with experience handling students of all ages. Had a US under 8 champion as well as MN state champions under my tutelage. Worked with single students and groups over 20. I have directed summer chess camps and assisted in youth chess tournaments. A Little Bit About Me...

As a high school student, I began teaching Sunday School and continued throughout my college years. While stationed in the USAF in Alaska, I decided to pursue teaching as a career. Upon completing college with a BS degree in Mathematics with an education emphasis, I began teaching high school math and science. I have taught in five different schools for a total of 31 years. During that time I also coached many extra-curricular school sports teams. Now I am teaching ACT and SAT prep classes in various schools of the Minnesota area. A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is one of real life applications, fun, and making it understandable. For example, when discussing slope, we can study downhill skiing or rooftops. When solving equations, I approach it from unraveling a number trick. I prefer to coach students on how to approach problems, and design which questions to ask themselves, rather than memorizing a list of techniques whenever possible. A Little Bit About Me...

One thing I have learned in my many years as a tutor is that each student is unique. I try to be flexible in my approach. With grammar and mechanics, I have found that a directive manner is often the best approach; sometimes, however, students require clarification of ideas and organization, in which case I pose questions and share observations, rather than instruct. With reading assignments, clarification of thesis, organization, and vocabulary are usually most helpful. Overall, I try to be as student-centered as possible in my approach to tutoring, without sacrificing a commitment to high quality instruction.
