Chess is one of my top subjects! I am a chess expert and experienced tournament player who has won state titles several times. I also have been teaching individuals and school chess clubs for over 20 years. Generally considered one of the best chess teachers in MN.

I am near master strength (expert USCF) with experience handling students of all ages. Had a US under 8 champion as well as MN state champions under my tutelage. Worked with single students and groups over 20. I have directed summer chess camps and assisted in youth chess tournaments. When solving equations, I approach it from unraveling a number trick. One thing I have learned in my many years as a tutor is that each student is unique. I try to be flexible in my approach. With grammar and mechanics, I have found that a directive manner is often the best approach; sometimes, however, students require clarification of ideas and organization, in which case I pose questions and share observations, rather than instruct. With reading assignments, clarification of thesis, organization, and vocabulary are usually most helpful. A Little Bit About Me...

I became interested in tutoring during my three years of graduate study at Princeton Theological Seminary. Studying theology in my undergraduate and graduate work required me to invest strongly in multiple subjects such as history, philosophy, languages, politics and literature. This equipped me to tutor multiple subjects at various levels.
