Experience Summary
I have a strong background in English, and am currently working toward a Master's degree at the University of St. Thomas. In addition to my strengths in academic research and writing, I have written solicitation letters and grant proposals for a nonprofit. I have tutored for seven years at three different institutions, including Normandale Community College, The University of Minnesota Center for Writing, and the Starting Point program for low income, first generation, and disabled college students at Minneapolis Community College. In addition to writing, I have helped students with reading, the humanities, and study skills.
Teaching Style
One thing I have learned in my many years as a tutor is that each student is unique. I try to be flexible in my approach. With grammar and mechanics, I have found that a directive manner is often the best approach; sometimes, however, students require clarification of ideas and organization, in which case I pose questions and share observations, rather than instruct. With reading assignments, clarification of thesis, organization, and vocabulary are usually most helpful. Overall, I try to be as student-centered as possible in my approach to tutoring, without sacrificing a commitment to high quality instruction.
