I am a native to Northern Italy, the place where I spent my primary and secondary school years. I moved from Europe to Kentucky last year, and I am now a sophomore Chemical Engineering student at UK. Italy is a very diverse place, from Italo Romance languages of Southern and Central Italy to Celtic italic languages of Northern Italy, with the addition of scattered German linguistic minorities. After the creation of Italy in 1961, Italian, the indigenous language of Tuscany and the language of the intellectuals and the aristocracy, became the official language of government bureaucracy. However, it was still unknown to a very large percentage of the population, and it was only after WW2 that ordinary people started learning and using Italian.

Learning can be fun...if done the right way

I lived my whole life in Damascus, Syria. Coming to the States every summer was very interesting for me, having the best of both worlds, my mother being from Kentucky, and my father syrian. Throughout my life, i never understood the value of being bilingual. Now i am very grateful for my upbringing and the education i was given. Arabic is a hard yet beautiful language, and one that will be spoken by all soon. I studied in the International school of Choueifat for 10 years, and for my senior year in high school, moved to a boarding school in Brummana,Lebanon. Sadly Arabic was not taught in that school, and thats when i came to appreciation with the language we all take for granted.
