My comments on tutoring Elementary Phonics : I hold a Master's degree in Special Education and am experienced as a K-5 special education teacher in all areas of language arts and math. I work with students with other health impairments, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and specific learning disabilities including dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. I am certified by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators as an Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educator. Orton-Gillingham is a multisensory literacy approach that includes explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, reading, spelling, and writing.

A Little Bit About Me...

I went to a Magnet Middle School which taught me accerlated Math and Science. I then went on to take all Honors courses, and some Advanced Placement courses, in High school. I graduated with Honors with an Advanced Diploma. I am now a third year student at Old Dominion University where I am studying Elementary Education. I currently work as a Program Leader at the Children's Learning and Research Center on campus. My all time easiest and favorite subject is Math, but I am well versed in many other subjects.

Summer Reading/English Tutor

I try to take this same approach myself to figure out what is important to students and play on their interests and strengths to help them learn. I typically try a couple of different styles, like flash card memorization, word association (sometimes seemingly unrelated but the funnier and more obscure they are, tend to stick in the memory better), picture association, etc. Having effective discussions about subject matters, particularly with difficult topics, can help the student gain a more in depth understanding.
