Psychology Professor/Reading Specialist

Over 25 years of teaching experience (all grade levels ~ from preschool to university graduate level courses). I enjoy tutoring, as it allows me to work one-on-one with a student to best assess their strengths and weaknesses in order to help them reach their goals. My doctoral work in Educational Psychology has given me a unique advantage in incorporating learning theory with applied teaching techniques. My clinical psychology experience and educational background has prepared me well for all forms of educational assessment. My post-Master's reading education work and research keeps me current on how best to diagnose and remediate reading comprehension and fluidity concerns. As an assistant psychology professor at the community college level, I am currently conducting my doctoral dissertation research on reading comprehension for this student population.

A Little Bit About Me...

Since I have entered the teaching profession I have worked with children of all elementary levels. This experience has provided me with the tools to work with all types of children from grades K-5. I have done various forms of tutoring in Reading and Math in preparation for the state administered tests.
My ability to break things down to a level where students can understand more thoroughly has always been a string point for me. This coupled with my ability to develop a strong rapport with students has produced a positive result. I have large amounts of energy and enthusiasm that children gravitate to. On the recent term assessment for Charlottesville City Schools my children scored an 86% ave ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been blessed with professors at the university level who understand the importance of one-on-one instruction. Through the "creativity" of thoughtful instructors I have seen myself grow and develop in ways that I hadn't thought possible. Every student learns differently, and once the instructor gets to know the student well enough and is able to tailor their lessons to the needs of the student, true learning happens. Teaching isn't just about preparing a student for a test; teaching is about creating and inspiring the desire to learn within the student so that they will be learn, not just because they are forced to, but because they are thirsty for knowledge.
I have spent several years as a student and tutor at the university level. I am planning to enter medical school in the Fall of 2012 and as such have developed a strong foundation in the sciences throughout my undergradu ... read more
