No pain, no gain. Learn, progress, and explore.

I am from South Korea and have been studying in America for 4 years. During 4 years, I was struggling to learn English and studying hard to follow my classes. As a result, I learned the efficient way of studying English(useful for people who are from other countries) and maintained A- grade during my high school. I taught Korean students who needed English help and American students who needed math help(especially for ACT math). I got 29 ACT overall score and 33 ACT math and 28 English ACT. Studying at St. Olaf College, I explored the joy of teaching. As a native Korean speaker, I taught American friends who are interested in Korean culture and Korean. During my freshman year at St.Olaf, I maintained A- grade and got a dean's list for the second semester. I enjoy teaching in general and understand the struggle of learning. Especially, math is a definitely challenging subject and somet ... read more

My comments on tutoring Biology : As a tutor in the college-prep after-school program Upward Bound,I helped students understand Biology concepts for 7 years, and know where the basic pitfalls are.

I start by giving a diagnostic test to assess each student's proficiency in the basics of Arithmetic and Algebra: fractions, decimals, percentages and the interconversion between them, and the rules of working with signed numbers. This approach stems from the notion that without these basics, Math is an uphill climb for most students. I place more emphasis on full work than answers.
I taught college-level Plant Science for 14 years. I spent 7 years as a tutor of Math and Science at the college-prep after-school program Upward bound, helping students with homework and preparing them for the ACT and the SAT. I am currently employed as a Math tutor at a local technical college where I help students with Basic Math, Intro Algebra,Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Trig and Elementary Statistics.

My teaching approach varies depending on the student. With youth, I am both patient and focused. I am also considerate and easy going. As the student gets older, I let them dictate what they would like to learn and the intensity they would like to learn it at. I respect students of all ages and I am always attentive to their needs.
My experience tutoring Math and Science is extensive. I started formally tutoring Chemistry in 1996 as a chemistry tutor. Throughout my Bachelor's and Master's degrees I tutored students independently. This helped me develop a wider range of approaches with which to help different students learn. I am well versed in many different mathematical disciplines. I am familiar with everything from arithmetic to graduate level mathematics and statistics. I am also familiar with many areas in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at the freshman level.

A Little Bit About Me...

I develop most of my lesson plans using GLAD principles. I like to use multiple senses, student interaction and various resources to keep the student active. When teaching a language, it is important to know the basic grammar structure first, and then speaking and listening follow. I work with people with disabilities, teaching them how to canoe with a company called Wilderness Inquiry. The company's motto is: Anyone, anywhere, anytime, any place. We strive to make this possible, because it is possible! It is possible to have a quadriplegic go on a canoe trip or a blind person to kayak through caves. I have learned that anything is possible with adaptation. While teaching, a successful teacher can allow everyone to learn, with adaptation.
During my undergraduate career, there were multiple influences that contributed to my passion for teaching. First, I tutored college students fr ... read more

During my sophomore year in high school I decided to begin tutoring ESL students. I found the ability to help others succeed very rewarding, and began tutoring fellow classmates in courses including but not limited to English, math, biology, and chemistry. These sometimes difficult subject always made sense to me and I enjoyed watching as the students I tutored were successful. I have in that time earned a BS in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Florida State University. With this degree I have had extensive exposure and to and learned many different areas in the math and science fields. While earning this degree I volunteered in an after school program tutoring under-priveledged children in the Tallahassee area. Throughout the last 6 years I have found that tutoring is a very rewarding experience. I prefer the 1 on 1 setting to better explain and address all the needs of a specific ... read more

Although I have recently graduated with a degree in business, I am interested in pursuing a career involving people. My previous employment was a sales position that was very customer-oriented. I also have 3 years of experience helping children by teaching swimming lessons. Assisting my 15-year-old sister with her school work is also a regular activity.
I believe in a teaching style that reflects a student's learning style. Whether they learn best by hearing, seeing, or doing it is important to cater to the student. My teaching style works around this philosphy and tends to be a combination of all 3 styles.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a current Master student at MNSU in Mankato and I received my Bachelors of Science in Biology in 2009. Currently I am planning a thesis and developing my skills in grant writing. I'm a very patient and personable guy. I will make sure that you have all your questions answered and also help you develop efficient study techniques.
Establishing a friendship with a student can make the learning process go much better. Defining strengths and weakness can allow for appropriately allocation of time to promote more efficient studying. Kinetic learning would be used to provide a visual demonstration of the material for better understanding.

I like to make learning interesting and challenging. This is done to stimulate interest and involvement of the student. I always so practical applications for everything I teach. From Manners to Math there are ways to touch a mind in a meaningful way. This has its danger as the class observes more unique situations than I do and I get to make sense of the situation, for myself and the students, with only a sliver of information. But that is what makes life fun.
My experience’s range from venture capital proposals, running a factory, to volunteering at my son’s preschool. My undergraduate education was started and completed at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. My first professional position was with Coca-Cola in Atlanta. I elected to take transfers to Dallas and then to Minneapolis. While in Minnesota I started and completed the part time (evening) MBA program at S ... read more

I primarily use a question-and-answer technique. I am very adept at identifying when a student's understanding of a subject is not where it should be. I'm also an expert in using examples to explain a point. Especially when explaining technical things I can use non-technical examples to offer enlightenment. For example, while helping one of my sons learn college calculus I related first differentials to a police officer detecting speeders. I also have many years of experience and can provide examples for many learning experiences from my own background.
I have a Bachelor's degree in engineering as well as an MBA. Both degrees were achieved with very high GPAS. I have a vocational teaching certificate from the State of Minnesota and have taught computer programming in vocational school. I've also spent many years as a project manager. In that position I was responsible ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I earned a Bachelors of Science in Biology with a minor in Environmental Science from Viterbo University. I started tutoring when my religion teacher observed that I was excelling and asked if I would tutor a fellow student. After that I began tutoring remedial math and college algebra. The Math Specialist, who was the coordinator for the Math 001 course, and myself were able to create a structured and effective tutoring method for her remedial math students. I also tutored a semester of Biology 100. I enjoy tutoring because I love seeing a student finally understand the subject matter. I have had the opportunity to work with several personalities and understand how to handle several different social situations.
As far as teaching style, I think it is important to listen to what the student really needs and adapt your teaching style based on their needs. I've learned with math espe ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. My main interests and degree lie in medical sciences. I have a Bachelors of biomedical sciences degree with chemistry and psychology minors. However, I enjoy tutoring a broad range of subjects and having been able to tutor for the past eight years in subjects such as math, science, social studies, English, music, I have been able to maintain a general knowledge of these subjects.
I believe that teaching is not knowing the answers, but understanding how to get to the answers. I am a very organized and patient tutor and have great respect for my students. I believe that with the right tools, any child can learn and improve their understanding. I know no two students learn in quite the same way, and I am able to adjust my teaching methods to fit a child's needs.
