I graduated from St. Lawrence University, a liberal arts foundation of learning that has served me judiciously on the metaphorical road of life. For the past several years I have applied my interest for the ocean environment, marine mammals and teaching to volunteer for education outreach in schools and the local communities in coastal Delaware. A wise man once said; to learn, read; to know, write. But to master, teach. Teach is one of those nifty reflexive verbs where the teacher and pupil are interchangeable. If both are patient, resourceful, imaginative and caring the learning becomes less process and more flow. I believe that every child has a right to learn. I believe that, no matter what kind of problem or learning disability that student has, that he/she deserves to learn. It is the responsibility, not only of the teacher, but the parents, grandparents, siblings and community to help children receive the best education that they can. I believe that all children learn differently. Some learn through doing; some through listening; others are a combination. I teach to each child in the way that best helps them to learn. While completing my masters in Special Education, I have learned creative ways to help children with special needs that I work with. I am a currently a working civil engineer specializing in bridge design (steel and concrete structures). I received scores of 760 in Math on both the SAT I and II, and a score of 800 in Math on the GRE's. I have taken several high level calculus, engineering mathematics, and statistics classes at the University of Delaware, aside from receiving a 5 on both the Calculus and the Statistics AP Exams. I have tutored elementary students in the past, and was part of a 'teaching scientists' after school company briefly in college. I believe in talking through problems using visual ideas and simplified concepts. I prefer teaching with graphics and concepts, and then relating them to formulas and equations. While I expect hard work from my students, I also have the patience to help them understand at their own pace.
