I have helped so many international students in English. As for math, I would insist on helping friends and anyone who is wishing to need help. For math, I would explain the mechanics and techniques of how to get the answer. I want to make sure the student understands fully so I would also be asking the student questions just to ensure he or she knows the material well. For English, I would focus on practicing and discussion. Since it is a langauge, I focus more on practicality.
