Experience Summary
Hello! My name is Mihir Kumar, and I recently graduated from USC under the full-tuition Trustee Scholarship with dual degrees in Human Biology and Economics, and a minor in Mathematical Finance. I’ve been tutoring since 2016 and am currently saving up for medical school, so I'm really looking forward to working with new students!
Over the past few years, I have tutored over 75 K-12 students in standardized testing (primarily ACT/SAT/PSAT), math (from elementary operations through Calculus), the basic sciences, English, reading, writing, and more totaling over 2500 total hours (both online and in-person). Many of my students have improved their SAT and ACT scores by 250-350+ points and 5-8+ points, respectively, too.
Having experience with the internal workings of the USC admissions process, I also provide college admissions assistance and have assisted many students in earning admission to wonderful colleges such as Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Oxford, the University of Warwick, the London School of Economics, Boston University, USC, etc.
If you are interested, please let me know if you would like any additional information, references, or a resumé. You can also reach me by email or through phone/text — just ask! Thank you very much!
Teaching Style
I really pride myself in personalizing my tutoring. I try to never have more than 6-7 students at a time so that I can provide the best possible personalization of teaching to each student. Additionally, being at a similar age to many of my students helps me relate to them a lot better than some older tutors may be able to; I have more recent experience with taking the same courses/tests as them or applying to colleges like them, and this helps a lot in my tutoring personalization.
In terms of my teaching style, I love being able to connect with students beyond the structured environment of most classrooms and tutoring/prep academies. I try to provide my students with just enough structure so that they know how to study, how to test, etc., but enough autonomy so that they can learn how to succeed on their own.
Helping students navigate this fine line is really meaningful, as many of my students have reached out to me after starting college talking about how the study habits we built together were really helpful. This means a lot to me and I look forward to helping more students develop similarly powerful habits.
