A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style devotes about half the time to direct instruction, but I make that a firm upper limit. The student must do the active learning in a classroom, and I foster this by Socratic questioning, discussions, and project work. Tutoring demands an even lower percentage of direct instruction than does classroom teaching, and as a tutor I encourage the student to direct his own session as much as possible.
I gained my BA in History only after years of serious and devoted study, and I bring a respect for whatever subject I teach to the classroom. After gaining my teaching certification with my MS, I taught history and geography in Alabama. After my Latin American Studies MA. I taught Latin, Greek, and Spanish. A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching Style: When the school busses arrived in the morning at Drumlin Farm, I would always welcome the visiting pupils with great enthusiasm. I would determine what the boys and girls already knew, or thought they knew, and what they would like to learn. Then we would go off to have a joyous and educational time learning about, and milking the cows, collecting and scrambling eggs, or planting pumpkin seeds in the warm May soil. I still remember the inner city classroom teacher who remarked on how "Johnny", a boy who tended to cause trouble in the classroom, was now thoroughly engaged in the project, and eagerly helping his buddies.
