Throughout high school and college, I have tutored peers and younger students in both math and physics several times, occasionally for pay. Last year I was a course assistant for a college freshman-year math course in theoretical math at Harvard University. I am enrolling in a PhD program in pure math at the University of Texas, Austin, where I will have a 16-hour-per week teaching load including three sections of undergraduate calculus. When I was a course assistant, my section scored higher on the quizzes and exams than the other sections. I certainly put in a lot of effort and enjoyed teaching and helping students gain the deep understanding of the material to do well in a difficult college math course. My written and spoken communication skills are honed due to a liberal arts education at Harvard including humanities and science education, besides a concentration in theoretical

I've always loved to read, I inhereited it from my father who got it from his father. I'm an avid writer as well. I currently write book reviews for The San Francisco Book Review and the San Diego Book Review. You'll find samples of my work at http://www.thereadingcan.blogspot.com . I really feel I can help youth and young adults learn to read. Currently I work with individuals who have disabilities to find and maintain work. I would like to help youth and young adults with disabilities learn to read as well. Every one can learn. Sometimes an individual learns in their own unique style and finding that style is the key to teaching them. The best way to teach someone is to guide them when they come to a road block, rather than to give them the answer. The amount of pride and prestige that comes from having figured out a problem on their own is the most important thing.

I think that teachers need to be flexible, and be willing to adapt their teaching style to suit the needs of their students. This is especially true for tutors who are often involved in a one-on-one relationship with those they tutor. I'm patient and respectful of the difficulties students have with expressing their thoughts in words. It's not unusual that they get frustrated trying to fit them into what can seem like a formal and obstuctive grammatical framework. Math is also a subject with which people often have difficulty. Being empathetic to their struggles helps to overcome them. My experience has been that most who struggle with it do pretty well with math if they make the effort. I have eight years experience teaching Math at Lyndon State College in Vermont and at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio. I was also a writing tutor at The Writing Center at Lyndon State.

During my undergraduate studies, I was involved in various tutoring/mentoring organizations on campus. I served as a mentor for local area children ages 8-14 as part of an after-school "big buddy" program. During my junior and senior years, I tutored newer students in math, science, and engineering courses. Additionally, I served as a teaching assistant for an upper-level engineering course where I was involved in activities such as answering students' questions regarding course materials, and grading assignments and providing constructive feedback. I am currently working on completing a Masters degree part-time, and would like to pursue a career in teaching. I believe that I am a very patient person, as well as someone who is easy to get along with. I would describe my teaching style as calm and focused on fundamentals. For example, when teaching math, I focus on building conceptual und

I have found, through teaching a wide variety of people a wide variety of subjects, that there is no one way to reach someone. Everyone has individual strengths and weaknesses. What I have found, however, is requisite to meet the needs of all students is respect for the learner. Without the requisite respect and encouragement, struggling students find it easy to give up and continue to believe that they aren't able to learn the material being presented. With respect and understanding for the students' needs, along with patience, preparedness and open communication, I feel I am able to reach students who are willing to be reached, and some who initially aren't so willing. I recently graduated in Economics from Bishop's University. In my final year at Bishop's, I taught a couple tutorials to assist students in lower level economics courses. In addition, I succeeded quite well in 4 mathemat

It is difficult to describe my teaching style because I try to adapt to the student. Students learn differently and therefore it is my belief that you must observe first and then you have to adapt to the student, especially in a one on one situation. Some students may learn better if you play a game with them, others if you read them a passage. I try to learn as much as I can about the student and adapt to their individual needs, especially for those with learning disabilities and special needs. I have had a deep interest in helping people since I was a young child. Seeing someone succeed because of my help is one of the greatest motivators for me, especially when it's "against the odds". As a college student I tutored the students who really wanted to learn but couldn't through no fault of their own--those with learning disabilities and non-native English speakers. I have tutored many s

As an experienced Remedial Language Specialist, I have been responsible for designing and implementing individualized programs for students with a wide range of learning styles. In addition to fostering reading proficiency, vocabulary acquisition and strategies for passage comprehension, I am also an expert at teaching the writing process from brainstorming to outlining to final revision. I am passionate about language and empowering students with tools for academic success. My teaching approach is to be direct and explicit, as well as facilitative. When working with students, my goal is that they internalize concepts and strategies that will ultimately enable them to perform independently. Then, when teaching reading and writing, I emphasize underlying structures and organization of text and the steps in the writing process. Breaking down barriers by pulling out language and ideas opens

I am a certified teacher in the area of middle school social studies. I am now also qualified for high school certification. I have been working as a long-term substitute in Burlington area schools in social studies for the last 5 years. I have also been working as a paraeducator in special education. I have worked in all subjects. I have a high interest in math, and successfully advanced to, and passed, Calculus two in college. This past year I have been helping several students one-to-one in geometry, algebra, and algebra two. I have also taught small group and one-to-one reading and writing at the high school and middle level. I believe that every student learns differently. I enjoy working one-on-one with students to give them an explanation that is meaningful to them. I also try to present new material in a way that is tailored to the learning style of the student. While I strive to convey my own enthusiasm for learning, my first priority is to be adaptable to different learning styles. I appreciate the concept of tutoring for the one-on-one scenario it offers because I know that many students struggle to have their needs met in a classroom setting. As a tutor, I aim to understand the individual needs of each student in order to effectively help them learn and help them enjoy learning. I enjoy learning and think of my education as a continual process. In my experiences, I have gained a wide range of skills encompassing leadership, peer training, and interpersonal communication. I have earned a BA in Communication, completed a graduate level Leadership program, studied in Spain and most recently, I traveled extensively in Peru. In my previous career as a sales representative in Telecommunications, I was quickly promoted to a leadership/project manag

As an average person, I enjoy teaching children the values and importance of their education while befriending them and understanding where they are in relation to their social-emotional, physical, and educational development. No two children are the same, and we know that this is correct, so therefore it applies to their learning ability as well. Some children need visual simulation to really ingrain the principle that is trying to be understood. While other's learn by complete repetition. My teaching style is all relative to the child and the subject area being covered.

Due to my background and experience in behavorial science, my warm personality and sense of humor, students quickly learn to trust me; thus the learning begins. My analytical insights and assessments of each student's learning style including their strengths and weaknesses, guides my teaching approach. While each student is held accounable for their best efforts, I create a supportive learning environment, emphasizing their achievements. As I guide the student through newly acquired skills and knowledge, they also develop responsibility for their own learning. My career in education includes a wide range of experience. I began as a substitute teacher covering for classroom teachers ranging from preschool to the 12th grade. My innate teaching abilities became evident and I was highly sought after. I am a Teach for America teacher. This means that in 2009, I applied with 40,000 applicants and was among the 4000 selected to become a teacher in a Title One school. As a TFA teacher, I have undergone intensive training that focuses on backwards planning and results based accountability. In the past year I have taught fourth and fifth grade subjects including: writing, science, social studies, fine arts, and technology. Prior to becoming a teacher, I worked with teens in crisis. In that role I worked with teens to develop healthy coping skills in times of great stress. I've also tutored in biology, psychology, and English while I was in college. I am passionate about igniting a child's natural inquisitiveness to facilitate learning. It is my firm belief that education must be more than memorization. A student must be able to incorporate the information that they are learning into their
