Hello! My name is Kayla Bear. I am a first-year student at Purdue University; however, I am a sophomore according to my credit hours. I earned college credit in high school to get ahead of the game. I worked as a peer mentor throughout high school, helping students with their homework and helping prepare them for tests such as the SAT. I have taken a number of courses in various subjects, so I feel that I am able to help a wide range of students. I was editor of my high school yearbook last year, so I have a lot of experience training people in writing and grammar. I am an experienced special education teacher with twenty-one years of teaching experience. I have many years of experience tutoring students on a After-School Reading Program and Homework Tutoring Program in grades K-4. I am caring, patient, and understanding when working with students in need of extra-support or who have special needs, so students succeed at learning. I know many alternative teaching strategies to address each student's learning-style, so students succeed at learning and develop a positive self-esteem. I make learning exciting, motivating, align my lessons to the state standards, and offer challenging learning opportunities to students, so students are prepared for the ISAT Test and the next grade-level.

My teaching style varies upon subject and student. I graduated from Jefferson High School in the spring of 2012. I now attend Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne. I have two younger siblings and 4 younger step-siblings that I have helped with their homework, or helped them better understand material assigned to them. Their ages range from 8-17. I know how to explain certain subjects in multiple ways to ensure that eventually the student will understand the material. I am very patient, and I understand that some people learn at slower rates than others. I am majoring in nursing, though I considered teaching English before making this decision. I love teaching, and am looking to make some extra money for things I need while in college.

Study skills are necessary to learn especially in preparation for Junior High/Middle School. These involve note taking skills and organization skills which enforces study skills. Over 16 years, I have taught various subjects for students with hearing impairments. I also have experience in teaching students with multiple disabilities as well. I have had experience in teaching an after school program with students who needed assistance in learning. In addition, I have taught American Sign Language classes to parents. I have experience in teaching students, ages 7-21. I teach with a hands-on style. I incorporate various strategies based on the student's needs such as kinesthetic, visual, auditory, and a combination if needed. I observe and I assess student's strengths and weaknesses. Based on the information and results, I determine the correct strategy to use to help a student.
