Hello, my name is Lauren and I absolutely love tutoring! I have tutored since I was in high school (about 5 years of experience total)and more recently have worked as a Peer Tutor at Westminster College, as well as teaching private voice and piano lessons. As a biology major, I'm most experienced in science and math related areas, particularly general biology, general chemistry, statistics, algebra, and geometry. I am also very qualified to tutor ACT and SAT test prep, as I scored extremely high in all areas of the two tests, earning a 34 on the ACT and a 2190 on the SAT. I'm also qualified to tutor in several humanities areas, especially writing-a skill strongly emphasized by Westminster's intensive and selective Honors Program. I will help with Musical Studies, Graphic Design, and Art.

Throughout high school, I had trouble trying to figure out what I wanted to do when I graduated. I took many classes that ranged from Weight Training to Biology. I took many Art classes in which I excelled at. I then took some Computer Technology classes and I loved it. So I figured I would put the two together and took Graphic Design classes. I loved it. I am very competent in using all sorts of Graphic Design programs. I got my first guitar around 8 years ago and just picked it up and learned it. I have been learning ever since. I personally, have taught many people the basics of guitar and gave them the tools to excel in music.

I love teaching. Currently I am working with adults in debt management and financial counseling. Money management is critical to the survival of a family and easily sabotaged by impulse spending. I most enjoy one-on-one situations. I have good people skills and have worked with children and adults from many cultures and walks of life.
I was first introduced to accounting by owning my own business. Then I was hired by an engineering company to update their bookkeeping method from paper to computer. I became proficient in troubleshooting discrepancies and providing users with solutions. I interfaced with Federal and State taxing agencies, banks, and lending institutions requiring reports and/or payments. I then moved on to a Software Development company as a Product Manager of accounting software being developed for internet use by accountants. I trained and answered questions, ... read more

I want to help students question to find meaning in life. I want to help students learn which questions to ask so that their answers are founded in principle and not merely reactions against traditional authority or thought. The art of learning is a skilled art. The task of leading another to discovery is a weighty one. I take the time of my students seriously. I would not waste their time any more than I wish mine to be wasted. Passion drives my life and my teaching. I feel the literature. I feel language. I recognize the need to individualize the presentation to each student’s experiences and understandings if s/he is to discover the joy of learning.
As I finish a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership with an emphasis in training and development, I realize that I want to continue my formal educational while sharing my love of learning. My prior formal education includes ... read more

I have been a photographer and receptionist for Bell Photography for 8 years now. And during this time spent at schools all along the Wasatch front, I am amazed at how many children have problems when they come to our lines. My formal education is High School. But I have done many other jobs including having our own business for 30 years, and the most important one.... being a Mother for 22 years. I now have my oldest two daughters out of High School and a son to graduate in May.
I know that there are so many children that are just plain scared. They see so many children that have more then they do, and they come from all different situations, and backgrounds, that I think they feel doomed. I see so many children that I think really dont even receive the love they need at home. I think they need to feel loved and have their self esteem built. To be given some one on one time instea ... read more

I received my BS in Electrical Engineering in December. I was one of two who graduated under the Honor's Program and maintained a 3.72 GPA. I've been tutoring math ever since my second semester in college and even while I was in high school. I've taken Calculus 3, differential equations, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics and received an A in each of them. I have a great deal of experience along with a sound background in mathematics.
When it comes to math, there is always more than one way to attack the problem at hand and each method appeals to different students. I usually start off with one and I can quickly tell if another would be more effective for each individual since I've noticed everyone has different styles of learning. I do believe everything mathematical can be taught and learned - there are no lost causes when it comes to math.

A Little Bit About Me...

I was an American Read tutor at two elementary schools. I worked with kindergarteners and third graders to enhance their reading skills. In a one on one setting with approved books and kept them on track will goals that we set to meet each each. While I earned a bachelor's of science in Zoology where I took human anatomy. I have also tutored my younger four siblings through school.
I get to know the student first and see how best he/she learns. and go from there. I have worked with so many different personalities that I have been able to help each the best I can with understanding and patience. Tutoring a subject that I also had to learn will make it easier to teach them the tools that I needed to do the same. I hope that by showing how I did and that it was doable that they too can do it.

Ever since I was introduced to American Sign Language (ASL), I have been deeply fascinated in the language and its speakers. A year after my initial experience with ASL, I decided to create my own Bachelor's Degree at the University of Utah. I was able to design curriculum pertaining to my desired field of interest. The classes I took were mostly education related. I had several classes in education psychology, multi-cultural education, diversity and culture. My major emphasis was on language and more specifically, deaf culture. Last Spring I tutored a family in their home in Park City. Their daughter was a participant in the SLC Deaflympics this past winter and they wanted to learn how to sign. It was a wonderful experience. I am an extremely organized person and love to be creative. I enjoy writing and art in my spare time. I also enjoy helping students learn to communicate ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I spent the last two years in Warsaw, Poland teaching English as a Foreign Language. My duties included planning and preparing daily lesson plans as well as semester course programs, traveling to different locations to teach school-aged children or adults in different environments, keeping records of material covered, preparing and administering exams at the end of each term, and completing reports about students at the end of the year. I have experience teaching children (ages 5 to about 15) and adults. The children I worked with ranged in ability from beginners (at most a few words of English) to upper-intermediate (teenagers with a fairly high level of understanding and communication). As to my education, I have a total of five years of college education, two at Highline and three at WSU. In that time I took a variety of classes, including creative writing, philosophy, psychology ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching, but to students about 12 and older. I am able to relate and connect well with them, and let them learn and take pride in their progress. Especially with younger kids, a high degree of focus on my part can be necessary to keep them on task, but I find that one can be firm with them and not need to be patronizing or forceful.
I have previously been a tutor for private individuals while I was making my way through college, and also as a professional duty while I was employed by the Salt Lake City Public Library, where I worked for six years. I have not been a tutor for a few years, although I currently volunteer with the International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake by assisting program workers teach english speaking and reading skills to new refugee immigrant women.

The early years of my experience were in the junior high setting. I taught sixth through ninth grade during this time, drawing heavily on my background strengths in theater, literature, grammar, creative writing, and my years as a legal secretary. I developed curriculum for the English department and was instrumental in launching an exploratory study system for alternative, creative learning. For the last twelve years, I have taught basic writing for the Salt Lake Community College and the University of Phoenix. I have also served the Education Departments at the University of Phoenix and Utah State University as a Supervisor to student teachers in grades 1-12.
