I feel that the most important step to being an effective teacher is to make the material relevant. If the student does not see a relevant reason to learn the material, the learning curve will be much steeper. Then, I work hard to be sure the student understands my commitment to partner with him/her in the learning process, and that process is a two-way street. My first major mentoring/teaching experience occurred in college when I began leading study groups and eventually organizing tutoring sessions with a number of my fellow English, Calculus, and Physics students. I then obtained a position as a youth counselor with the YMCA and quickly moved up to Site Coordinator where I was in charge of my own after school care group, including being in charge of organizing activities and managing youth counselors. Most recently I underwent PADI Divemaster training where I had real world experience teaching and assisting PADI Open Water students with classroom, confined water, and open water training. I was born in Jamaica; however I am a citizen of the United States of America. I am from a very large family where education and hard work were our mantra. My father attended the Oxford University in England and later became a Civil Engineer where he worked in Israel and in Jamaica. He was also a member of parliament in Jamaica. In his later years, my father was the owner of a real estate development company and commercial farming. My mother attended the University of the West Indies and Shortwood Teachers’ College and has recently retired from her position as the principal for a primary and junior high school in Jamaica and she is also a Justice of the Peace which is equivalent to a Mayor. After graduating with a double major in Psychology and English with an emphasis in Literature, I started my graduate work in English and a teaching position as a high school English teacher. I took education certification courses and passed the state exam for the State of Florida for middle school and high school English. I was an instructional aide for Adult Education at Martin County where I tutored in spelling, grammar, literature and prepared adults for the G.E.D.
