My first major mentoring/teaching experience occurred in college when I began leading study groups and eventually organizing tutoring sessions with a number of my fellow English, Calculus, and Physics students. I feel that the most important step to being an effective teacher is to make the material relevant. If the student does not see a relevant reason to learn the material, the learning curve will be much steeper. Then, I work hard to be sure the student understands my commitment to partner with him/her in the learning process, and that process is a two-way street. My teaching style is dynamic. I try to make all lessons interesting to capture the attention of my students. Typically, I teach the material for a short period in the beginning of the lesson, but focus my efforts on reinforcing the acquisition of knowledge and skill in the student through activities and cooperative discussion of the material.
