I have taught pre-k for 2 years prior to my experience in elementary education. I have a variety of experiences working with children in various settings including tutoring. For the past two years, I was a first grade teacher in a public school. This year I will be a first and second grade teacher in a private school. I have never had formal experience tutoring. However Throughout my years of schooling I would participate in study groups which I see as everyone tutoring eachother. I also have two siblings, one very close in age and the other is approximately four years younger. Needless to say, I frequently helped my younger sister with her homework. Just to clarify when I say 'help' I do not mean I just gave her the answers, I would make sure that I either explained or demonstrated the correct way to approach a problem in order to make sure that she understood how to apply the knowlege come test time. I am a kenisthetic learner but when "hands on" is really not an option I (especially with mathematics) draw so that I have a visual, physical representation of the task at hand.

I have always enjoyed working with children, especially in a school setting. I am very good at working one-on-one with people and tailoring my communication and teaching style to best fit the student or listener. I am very keen at ascertaining the needs and personalities of many different people and I am very patient and adept at listening. My teaching style is probably best described as interactive. I encourage students to not only read the assignment and the assigned homework, but to question the validity of the issues being discussed, including what the author has written. By having student examine the issues and using critical thinking, they become better academics, but develop the ability to think outside of the box Over the course of my career, I have taught at just about every level, from middle school to graduate school.
