Logic Tutoring

In Logic, inductive reasoning is the process of deriving a reliable generalization from observations. Confused? Select a tutor today. Logic was studied in several ancient civilizations, including the Indian subcontinent, China and Greece. Logic was established as a discipline by Aristotle, who gave it a fundamental place in philosophy. The study of logic was part of the classical trivium. Logic is often divided into two parts, inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning. Want help? Select a tutor now. Test coming up on consistency, validity, soundness, and completeness? My comments on tutoring Logic: Expert at all Logic concepts. Particularly good at explaining logic from a Discrete Math perspective, building student fluency in logic starting with truth tables and propositional statements, logical connectives AND and OR and negation NOT, commutative, associative and distributive laws, as well as other laws which can be useful such as the idempotent law, rules of inference for proofs such as modus ponens, modus tollens, etc., and methods of proof, as well as logical fallacies. HOT TIP: How to reverse engineer a proof when you have no idea what you're doing on a test and work backward from the conclusion you're trying to prove. Instead of going forward from the start and saying, "If this is true, then this next thing must be true, and this next thing must be true, ..." instead work backward and say, "If this conclusion is true, then this previous thing MUST HAVE BEEN true, and this previous thing MUST HAVE BEEN true..." I will teach you all the dirty (but legal) tricks to survive hard tests.

If you watch me closely during our sessions, you can see me secretly paying keen attention to you and how you learn best. For example, you might say, "It LOOKS like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! LOOKS. Maybe you're a visual learner and like to SEE things explained and SEE examples. (About 80% of students are visual learners.) On the other hand, you might say, "It sounds like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! sounds. Maybe you like to HEAR things explained, and you're a keen listener and like to hear things described clearly and specifically. Or maybe you'll say, "I FEEL like they want me to factor here" (as you tap the problem with your pencil). And I'll think, "Aha! FEEL. Maybe you learn by intuition and need to just jump in and work a problem or two with me step-by-step and discover the pattern of what's going on and pick up the FEEL of it. So... ... read more

I received a BS in Horticulture from Va. Polytechnic Institute and State University. majored in Biology (Botany) for 3 years at Virginia Commonwealth Univ. and College of William and Mary. Recently retook Precalculus, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, and Calculus 3 at Virginia Western Community College. I have a background tutoring and running a tutoring center for STEM subjects at a community college for 3 years. I have been tutoring in some form for 6 years. I have a certification in tutoring ESL and several years experience in that. i am pretty relaxed and informal, but I expect students to do the work assigned. I help, but I don't do the work for them. I use Socratic questioning to get students to understand the material. I stress learning concepts and building on them as opposed to memorizing or guessing enough to pass a test.

I have spent several years as a student and tutor at the university level. I am planning to enter medical school in the Fall of 2012 and as such have developed a strong foundation in the sciences throughout my undergraduate education. Although I majored in Biology, my true passion is Chemistry. I spent 2 years on a religious service mission where I became fluent in Spanish. I am fascinated by the ability to communicate with an entirely new group of people. I learned Spanish by being immersed in the culture and have since studied Spanish at the university level in order to understand the "rules" behind speaking the language. I have been blessed with professors at the university level who understand the importance of one-on-one instruction. Through the "creativity" of thoughtful instructors I have seen myself grow and develop in ways that I hadn't thought possible. Every student learns di

I graduated from Liberty University in May 2009 with a BS in Accounting. I am currently and have been a substitute teacher in Bedford County for the 2009-2010 school year. I have substituted for grades 6-12. I have been a football coach at Liberty High School for 3 years and I have been a track & field coach at Liberty High School for 5 years. I have helped different types of students away from school in various subjects. I love math and I am in the process of completing the requirements to gain a teaching license to teach high school math. I really enjoy being around kids and helping them learn new things. When you teach a kid something and they finally get it, the sight of their face lighting up is priceless. I believe that one should teach using a variety of methods because all kids do not learn the same way and each individual method shows something new each time. I believe that all

As a college student I worked as a tutor in the learning center on campus. I have earned my bachelor degree in mathematics and my masters degree in secondary education. This allowed me to start my career as a high school math teacher. While earning my masters in education I also took several graduate level math courses, and once I started teaching I continued to take graduate level courses to gain a second masters degree in mathematics. With that I have been able to teach AP/Dual calculus at Cave Spring High School this school year as a dual instructor for Virginia Western. Teaching has always been a passion of mine. I love working with children and students. Through the differnt classes and levels that I have taught I have always believed that every student can succeed, even though the paths they take to get there may be differnt than others. When working with a class or an individual s

As a tutor for four years, I have tutored both college athletes and students in subjects including Calculus I and II, Biology, Organic Chemistry and General Chemistry. Additionally, I am experienced in tutoring high school students in subjects including chemistry, algebra I and II, precalculus, and calculus. As a student mentor for six years for Big Brothers Big Sisters, I have tutored elementary school-age children in subjects including language arts, math and science. I was awarded Big Sister of the Year for Greater Williamsburg. Due to my love for science, I plan to attend dental school this fall. I am compassionate, patient, and sincere. I taught 7th grade Language Arts for six years when I lived in Florida. I collaborated on the team that created the Orange County curriculum for teaching writing to the middle grades. This curriculum is still in use today. I worked for the Princeton Review as a tutor doing SAT preparation both privately and in a classroom setting. This was in preparation for both the verbal and math skills sections. I believe that students of all ages respond to humor, honesty, and respect. Subjects in which that students have difficulty can be made accessible to them by demonstrating to them the humor in learning something hard and the fun of conquering the subject. Learing should be something students enjoy.

I have graduated from two major universities and will attend medical school at Nova Southeastern University in August 2011. I have just recently graduated from USF College of Medicine with a Master’s degree in Medical Sciences and hold a degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Illinois. I have extensive research experience in bioinformatics from the University of Illinois. I have one year experience tutoring in the underprivileged area of Urbana, Illinois; at Garden Hills Elementary I tutored kids from 3rd and 5th grade classes who had fallen behind the scheduled lesson plan. I have also tutored my fellow classmates at both universities throughout the years and graduated with a GPA of 3.50 and 3.10, respectively. Teaching style involves organized and systematic approach to biology. I have been a student of two major universities one of which involved taking medica

The joy that teaching and interacting with children brings is indescribable; there are few things that can match the satisfaction one feels when a pupil finally "gets it!" I believe that true education comes through understanding. Oftentimes students are taught tricks or rules to help them through a subject area, but I strive to bring my students to a point of clarity; I want them to be completely comfortable with the subject content because they understand it, not because they memorized a formula. Therefore, I am a firm believer in teaching the material and not simply teaching students how to answer a particular question. I am a recent honors graduate of the Virginia Military Institute with a degree in civil and environmental engineering. This course of academic study exposed me to a broad range of upper-level mathematics, physics, and chemistry. During my college career I voluntee

I have always had the macroscopic view of mathematics (from basic algebra to advanced calculus) to know how everything fits together. If students could learn simply by having a textbook read to them, then there would be no need for teachers. But the effective teacher can and will make the difference in a student's ability to succeed. I apply my vast experience and knowledge to all of my lessons and provide a perspective that most teachers are not equipped to handle. I have taught mathematics at the high school and college levels spanning over 15 years. I have always been complimented on being able to explain difficult topics in plain straight-forward language. My primary profession is an actuary, bit I also tutor students in calculus and statistics during my spare time. I can create positive results by giving the student the necessary confidence in tackling seemingly impossible pro

I have a great deal of experience training fellow employees and have devised the system of show them once, let them do it once while talking them through it, and then let them do it once without assistance. This system also translates to teaching. The last step is the most important; it forces the student to think for him or herself and instills confidence that the problem is not beyond his or her level of understanding. It is very important to teach students how to figure things out for themselves – probably the most important lesson I learned at UVa. If a child knows how to utilize resources such as the textbook, example problems, and the internet, then he or she will be able to work independently through a tough problem. Education has always been extremely important to me. To me there is no greater feeling than finally grasping a difficult concept and I love helping someone else

I will be graduating in May 2011 with a Masters of Arts in Teaching for Special Education and will then obtain a teaching license for Special Education, K-12. During my Masters program I have taught students in large groups and small groups, performed assessments on students, and planned daily lesson plans and curriculum for students in a variety of subjects. Through my years of higher education I have gained a love for students, children, and education for everyone. I enjoy teaching students through a variety of methods including traditional, hands on, and student specific. Each student learns differently and as a tutor I seek to tailor the education to the specific skills and needs of the specific student. I believe the goal of teaching is not only to learn specific content and skills, but to inspire students to love learning, and make learning fun and interactive. I hope to chal

The underlying theme of my teaching is to excite and challenge students about the power and beauty of math and science. My approach emphasizes the aesthetics of rigor as a stepping stone to the development of new material within the context of existing knowledge, and students are encouraged to seek elegant methodologies wherever possible. I believe that successful teaching involves a careful combination of art and science, wherein technical skills are complemented by a kind and patient temperament that seeks to develop rapport with students across the spectrum of abilities. Moreover, a strong sense of personal enthusiasm should be demonstrated to students on a consistent basis for them to recognize how committed their teacher is. Respect for students as individuals must be shown at all times, even when they are poorly prepared and motivated, and teachers should set goals that will st

I believe that all students are capable of learning math. My goal is help each student understand math, and not just memorize steps. I accomplish this by using many methods to present material, including pictures, graphs, manipulatives, experiments, and physical movement. I have experience working with students of all levels of ability, and have enjoyed helping all of them. When I was young, I chose to pursue a career in Software Engineering because it was a practical and exciting way to make use of my passion for math. After working for nine years, I became a full mother. I began volunteering at the schools every chance I could. When my children left elementary school behind, I realized I wanted to teach math. I have been a middle school teacher of math for 8 years. My positions have included teaching all math subjects from Math 6 to Geometry. In addition, I tutored students af
