My comments on tutoring Logic: Expert at all Logic concepts. Particularly good at explaining logic from a Discrete Math perspective, building student fluency in logic starting with truth tables and propositional statements, logical connectives AND and OR and negation NOT, commutative, associative and distributive laws, as well as other laws which can be useful such as the idempotent law, rules of inference for proofs such as modus ponens, modus tollens, etc., and methods of proof, as well as logical fallacies. HOT TIP: How to reverse engineer a proof when you have no idea what you're doing on a test and work backward from the conclusion you're trying to prove. Instead of going forward from the start and saying, "If this is true, then this next thing must be true, and this next thing must be true, ..." instead work backward and say, "If this conclusion is true, then this previous thing MUST HAVE BEEN true, and this previous thing MUST HAVE BEEN true..." I will teach you all the dirty (but legal) tricks to survive hard tests.

I am currently employed by a college in Roanoke, Virginia as a tutor of mathematics, chemistry, and computer science and tutor elementary school, middle school, high school, college students, and others professionally. For the last 23 years, it has been so fulfilling working for three colleges and tutoring independently over 2,000 students of all ages in all areas of math and computer science, as well as college writing, adult literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL). I have a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and computer science and am internationally certified by the College Reading and Learning Association. I love tutoring more every year I do it. If you watch me closely during our sessions, you can see me secretly paying keen attention to you and how you learn best. For example, you might say, "It LOOKS like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! LOOKS. M ... read more

i am pretty relaxed and informal, but I expect students to do the work assigned. I help, but I don't do the work for them. I use Socratic questioning to get students to understand the material. I stress learning concepts and building on them as opposed to memorizing or guessing enough to pass a test. I received a BS in Horticulture from Va. Polytechnic Institute and State University. majored in Biology (Botany) for 3 years at Virginia Commonwealth Univ. and College of William and Mary. Recently retook Precalculus, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, and Calculus 3 at Virginia Western Community College. I have a background tutoring and running a tutoring center for STEM subjects at a community college for 3 years. I have been tutoring in some form for 6 years. I have a certification in tutoring ESL and several years experience in that.

I have spent several years as a student and tutor at the university level. I am planning to enter medical school in the Fall of 2012 and as such have developed a strong foundation in the sciences throughout my undergraduate education. Although I majored in Biology, my true passion is Chemistry. I spent 2 years on a religious service mission where I became fluent in Spanish. I am fascinated by the ability to communicate with an entirely new group of people. I learned Spanish by being immersed in the culture and have since studied Spanish at the university level in order to understand the "rules" behind speaking the language. I have been blessed with professors at the university level who understand the importance of one-on-one instruction. Through the "creativity" of thoughtful instructors I have seen myself grow and develop in ways that I hadn't thought possible. Every student learns di

I really enjoy being around kids and helping them learn new things. When you teach a kid something and they finally get it, the sight of their face lighting up is priceless. I believe that one should teach using a variety of methods because all kids do not learn the same way and each individual method shows something new each time. I believe that all kids can learn so much if they work as hard as they can and put forth maximum effort. I think it is very easy to learn/teach using as many hands on examples as possible. I graduated from Liberty University in May 2009 with a BS in Accounting. I am currently and have been a substitute teacher in Bedford County for the 2009-2010 school year. I have substituted for grades 6-12. I have been a football coach at Liberty High School for 3 years and I have been a track & field coach at Liberty High School for 5 years. As a college student I worked as a tutor in the learning center on campus. I have earned my bachelor degree in mathematics and my masters degree in secondary education. This allowed me to start my career as a high school math teacher. While earning my masters in education I also took several graduate level math courses, and once I started teaching I continued to take graduate level courses to gain a second masters degree in mathematics. With that I have been able to teach AP/Dual calculus at Cave Spring High School this school year as a dual instructor for Virginia Western. Teaching has always been a passion of mine. I love working with children and students. Through the differnt classes and levels that I have taught I have always believed that every student can succeed, even though the paths they take to get there may be differnt than others. When working with a class or an individual s

As a tutor for four years, I have tutored both college athletes and students in subjects including Calculus I and II, Biology, Organic Chemistry and General Chemistry. Additionally, I am experienced in tutoring high school students in subjects including chemistry, algebra I and II, precalculus, and calculus. As a student mentor for six years for Big Brothers Big Sisters, I have tutored elementary school-age children in subjects including language arts, math and science. I was awarded Big Sister of the Year for Greater Williamsburg. Due to my love for science, I plan to attend dental school this fall. I am compassionate, patient, and sincere. I believe that students of all ages respond to humor, honesty, and respect. Subjects in which that students have difficulty can be made accessible to them by demonstrating to them the humor in learning something hard and the fun of conquering the subject. Learing should be something students enjoy. I taught 7th grade Language Arts for six years when I lived in Florida. I collaborated on the team that created the Orange County curriculum for teaching writing to the middle grades. This curriculum is still in use today. I worked for the Princeton Review as a tutor doing SAT preparation both privately and in a classroom setting. This was in preparation for both the verbal and math skills sections.

I am a recent honors graduate of the Virginia Military Institute with a degree in civil and environmental engineering. This course of academic study exposed me to a broad range of upper-level mathematics, physics, and chemistry. During my college career I volunteered with a mentoring program known as Big Brother/ Big Sister to tutor elementary school students, and I also privately tutored fellow college students in Calculus I. The joy that teaching and interacting with children brings is indescribable; there are few things that can match the satisfaction one feels when a pupil finally "gets it!" I believe that true education comes through understanding. Oftentimes students are taught tricks or rules to help them through a subject area, but I strive to bring my students to a point of clarity; I want them to be completely comfortable with the subject content because they understand it,

Teaching style involves organized and systematic approach to biology. I have been a student of two major universities one of which involved taking medical school classes and will bring the same approach I use myself and translate it to the student as much as possible to ensure that the perfect study plan and strategy is found to achieve the performance that is necessary. I have experiences and used multiple learning techniques myself and will teaching these techniques and study habits to ensure peak performance. I have graduated from two major universities and will attend medical school at Nova Southeastern University in August 2011. I have just recently graduated from USF College of Medicine with a Master’s degree in Medical Sciences and hold a degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Illinois. I have always had the macroscopic view of mathematics (from basic algebra to advanced calculus) to know how everything fits together. If students could learn simply by having a textbook read to them, then there would be no need for teachers. But the effective teacher can and will make the difference in a student's ability to succeed. I apply my vast experience and knowledge to all of my lessons and provide a perspective that most teachers are not equipped to handle. I have taught mathematics at the high school and college levels spanning over 15 years. I have always been complimented on being able to explain difficult topics in plain straight-forward language. My primary profession is an actuary, bit I also tutor students in calculus and statistics during my spare time. I can create positive results by giving the student the necessary confidence in tackling seemingly impossible pro

Education has always been extremely important to me. To me there is no greater feeling than finally grasping a difficult concept and I love helping someone else achieve that feeling. Consistently during grade school, high school, and college, other students came to me for help with their schoolwork and I enjoyed providing them with a new perspective, or recapping the teacher’s lecture. I have worked as a tutor for migrant aid workers’ children, helping them to learn English, as well as with Biology, Math and Grammar. I have a BA in Biology with extensive credit hours in Chemistry. I have also worked as a Chemist for two and a half years. I have always enjoyed English and Grammar and have consistently excelled in both. I have a great deal of experience training fellow employees and have devised the system of show them once, let them do it once while talking them through it, and then

I enjoy teaching students through a variety of methods including traditional, hands on, and student specific. Each student learns differently and as a tutor I seek to tailor the education to the specific skills and needs of the specific student. I believe the goal of teaching is not only to learn specific content and skills, but to inspire students to love learning, and make learning fun and interactive. I hope to challenge the student in many ways, while helping them grow into their full potential. I will be graduating in May 2011 with a Masters of Arts in Teaching for Special Education and will then obtain a teaching license for Special Education, K-12. During my Masters program I have taught students in large groups and small groups, performed assessments on students, and planned daily lesson plans and curriculum for students in a variety of subjects. I have 25 years of teaching experience in math and science at the secondary and tertiary levels. Concurrent with this, I have spent about ten years tutoring individual students and small groups in a variety of subjects for enrichment and remediation purposes. Typical examples of my tutoring/teaching include preparation for college admission, SAT, and SOL. Official recognition of my expertise is seen in my Virginia Teacher’s License with postgraduate professional certificate, which I have held continuously since 1992. An even higher level of honor comes from being a Finalist for the Sporn award at Virginia Tech in 2001 (in top group of 7, out of 192 professors with 480 nominations) after nomination by students “for excellence in teaching introductory subjects”. To complement my teaching in the classroom, I developed a web site to support instruction of undergraduate courses and I hav

I believe that all students are capable of learning math. My goal is help each student understand math, and not just memorize steps. I accomplish this by using many methods to present material, including pictures, graphs, manipulatives, experiments, and physical movement. I have experience working with students of all levels of ability, and have enjoyed helping all of them. When I was young, I chose to pursue a career in Software Engineering because it was a practical and exciting way to make use of my passion for math. After working for nine years, I became a full mother. I began volunteering at the schools every chance I could. When my children left elementary school behind, I realized I wanted to teach math. I have been a middle school teacher of math for 8 years. My positions have included teaching all math subjects from Math 6 to Geometry. In addition, I tutored students af
