A Little Bit About Me...

Once I am assigned a child I initally spend time going over a typical homework assignment to see where they are having some trouble. I get them to read out loud to me to see what their level of reading is. Some kids have problems sounding out the words or with simple rules of grammar. Once I see where they are at then I start bringing in some workbooks to help them in that particular area and apply that to their homework.
Along with my educational background I was a Girl Scout Troup leader for three years and a volunteer for the American Lung Association and American Heart Association. I enjoy working with kids and contacted Barbara Kline of the Utica School District and started working in the Tutoring program with her for four years. I believe all students can learn and that it is up to the educator to discover the students' learning styles and then meet their needs. Foremost learning should be fun and meaningful.I create a safe environment, where students are inviited to learn, and have experience with mixed ability levels. I teach to the top, and differentiate instruction with intervention strategies to accomplish these goals. Students in my classrooms are empowered to learn and set personal goals for achieving growth.I use a constructivist approach: reflection response journals, reciprocal teaching strategies, and varying assesments to measure growth.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a big believer in stationed teaching concepts. A student must first, learn through audio and visual styles of learning through teacher-student interactions. I work on vocabulary strategies and skills next. The proper vocabulary background for any subject area should be clear and concise to the student. We next work on concept mapping, and linking common themes. There is a process to every step of learning. I will review often to look for missing concepts. Finally, independent learning is another station that is vital important. Assessing how a student can complete tasks on their own gives me an idea how well the instruction is going. I will learn and adapt from my own mistakes in instruction when needed.
