My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : Based on personal experience, not special training

I allow my teaching style to mold itself to each individual student, finding methods of communicating the information that best suit the learning style of my student. I favor a holistic approach to learning, believing that education should be of the whole person. If a student learns how a skill in his tutoring session can be applied in real life, then his or her perception of the subject may fundamentally improve.
I am a graduate of Tennessee Temple University, with experience tutoring at Tennessee Temple University, as well as University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, in various topics, including biodiversity, mathematics (up to pre-calculus), history, and American Sign Language. I continue to study in my personal time as many topics as possible, with the belief that a good tutor is firstly a good student.

I Will Meet You Where You Are!

I believe every student can learn! School was never meant to be a struggle, an effort yes, but not a struggle!
Hello! I have 15 years of teaching experience in the classroom and have been tutoring now since January of 2012. I have a true passion for teaching! I have taught in the parochial, private, and public schools. I taught at Assumption Catholic School from 1997-2004, English and Reading to 6th-12th grade ESE students at The Broach School from 2004-2008, and Intensive Reading to 11th and 12th graders at Andrew Jackson High School (public inner city urban in Duval County) from 2010-2011. I have also conducted FCAT, ACT, and SAT prep, as well as study skills in the summer months when students don't have schoolwork! While in the classroom my average student came up 3-4 grade levels in a year in reading comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, spelling, and language mechanics. My certi ... read more

My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : I am a certified Special Education Teacher K-12 in Florida. I work with students who have dyslexia and related learning disabilities on a daily basis. I myself have dyslexia, but when I was in school, the McKay scholarship wasn't around. I am certified in the LindaMood Belle LiPS method. This method has shown, through research, to be one of the best methods for teaching student with dyslexia how to read. This is actually how I learned how to read.

This depends on the student. I can teach verbally for students who are auditory learners, visually for student who are visual learners, and kinesthetically for students who are kinesthetic learners. I know that every student can learn, it just depends on finding the specific learning style for that student.
I have been working as a teacher for three years now. I enjoy working in a private school setting (two years experience) because I can devote more time to lesson planning, after school, and creating individualized/small group curriculum as there are less students in the private school I teach at. I am the Reading Specialist and I love my job. I myself had to learn to cope with dyslexia and ADHD. I know what students are going through because I have experienced it first hand. I teach a great deal of students who have learning disabilities as well as ASD. I create and implement ... read more

ALL STUDENTS WELCOME!

I have been a self-employed Tutor since April, 2006. Special needs and home schooled students are welcomed. Nothing makes me happier than when I see the smiles on the faces of my students when they succeed rather than fail. I assist all students in skill building and creating a life-long love of learning. I provide on-going feedback to parents and am happy to work with the teachers of my students.
Whenever I can, I like to be very hands-on in my teaching my students. For example, once I was teaching my class about trees. I had them go outside and collect samples of bark which had fallen on the ground. Then we created a gigantic mural in my classroom and glued the pieces of bark to a tree we had drawn.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked in both General Education and ESE education. I speak spanish fluently and french, semifluently. I also have some background in American Sign Language. I have also worked with the emotionally disturbed child.
I use whatever works best for the child and can hold their attention span. It depends largely on the child's age, interests, and whether or not there are any learning, or any other disabilities. All children are capable of learning and enjoying to learn. I believe all children, whether normal developing or special needs deserves the same experiences, just delivered in different ways.

As a Cum Laude graduate from the University of Florida, I continue to hold a high level of discipline in every aspect of life. Whether it be at work, at home, or at school, I feel it is imperative to do your best no matter what the situation. Upon graduation at the age of twenty, I began teaching undergraduate courses for UF. This was an honor, but it was not challenging enough. It was not until I helped students with severe mental and physical disabilities that I felt fulfilled in my profession. Being able to teach student who are eager to learn, but have obstacles during the learning path, is a blessing! I have been blessed to teach students of all grade levels (PK-College) and have tutored students from ages 5 to 25.
Hands on teaching and kinesthetic learning are key to success in my mind. I love to involve the student's entire body in the learning process. From their se ... read more

I believe the importance of a good education is not primarily mastery of a particular subject area, but is preparing students to seek out knowledge about anything they will encounter throughout their lives. A strong and effective teacher is one who will act as a guide and facilitator to students rather than simply a source of knowledge. A willingness to learn on the part of a student and the ability to encourage self discovery on the part of a teacher will pave the way for success in all learning environments. I believe in varying teaching methods to draw and hold the attention of a student, as all children learn differently, but all are capable of learning.
After working in the field of business for a number of years, I chose teaching as a second career because I wanted to help children reach their fullest potential. I earned a BA in Education in 2006 and taught elementary scho ... read more

I believe patients is the key to all with learning. Especially to children who have a hard time at school or may come from a family that education is not emphasized. Children no matter what age can feel fustration and anxiety from others remaining calm, positive and assuring is the best way to get a child relaxed enough to be able stopo worrying about all other things going on in the lifes and focus on the subject at hand. Letting them know you 'know' they can do it and will stick it out with them until they do. I believe that having one person who believes in them can change a childs life and how they feel about themselves and there educational future. Every decision we make in life is a result of consequences. I would love to be that postive emforcement and make a difference in a childs life.

I come to you with thirteen years of teaching experience. I am the mother of three. I was raised and attended college right here in Jacksonville, Fl. I graduated from Edward Waters College in 1993.It is my vision and mission to give a student confidence and compassion in reading, writing, and history. All children can benefit!
I enjoy working with children. There are several assessment tools that I use in order to see where I would need to begin with any child. One of my favorite forms of assessment is Great Leaps.I have used this program and have seen growth in all subjects with students. Some students who were reading below grade level are now functioning with confidence on grade level. We all are like candles someone sparked our fire and now look how bright our lights our shinning.I would love to be that spark for your child.
