I am a Love and Logic teacher; choice is the biggest driving force in my classroom. I give students the power to shape their learning and success by offering them choices, and using enforceable statements. My goal is that all students leave with a sense of accomplishment which has been shaped by them.
A licensed educator for 13 years, I have developed a deep understanding of students and what makes them motivated to learn. I appreciate the challenge of developing strategies to refocus student learning and make them more accountable and actively involved. No two students learn and develop skills in the same way and I embrace that by using tools to engage students where they are and then pushing them to discover where they can be. I am an active teacher. I want students to understand the subject in the context of their own lives as opposed to just learning definitions. If they can realate the information to an actual happening, they are more likely to remember. In terms of test preparation, aside from learning the information it is important to work on test-taking skills (relaxation, focus, etc.). Being prepared for such large tests is more than just knowing, it is recalling under pressure. I work with all of that to help the student.

My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. When I entered Knox College I was focusing on English, and ended up helping my fellow students with writing and editing their papers.
I have always sought to lead rather than force something upon the student by rote. Most important is to present the information in a way that is both interesting and memorable. It is my experience that people remember things better when they truly understand the process, and have reason to listen to the explanation.
