I had my first experience with tutoring in an intensive summer program at Georgia Tech before my freshman year when a good friend and upperclassman helped me navigate my way through Chemistry and college life. I had my first official tutoring role as a teaching assistant and mentor for an introductory course for incoming Chemistry and Biology majors. In addition, I had the opportunity to do chemistry demonstrations at Atlanta middle schools and science fairs. I graduated from Tech with a BS in Chemistry. I have come to the conclusion through both personal experience, observation of other master teachers and through current educational research that it is most necessary to teach reading and math daily in a systematic manner while exposing the students to a learning rich environment(a classroom reading corner full of books is ideal for this). Research shows that a child needs 100 exposures, repetitions of for example the word “fox” to learn how to read it and make it their own.
