My comments on tutoring GED : Standardized tests prep is my favorite type of tutoring sessions because it enhances knowledge a student already has. I teach them to utilize that knowledge to develop skills that can be useful over an entire spectrum of things. It is exciting to see how suprised some students are at their own innate skills in subjects they felt were their weakest.

I believe that people learn the best when they understand the meaning and logic behind what they are learning. When a student can see a pattern develop they develop an understanding that can be universally applied to many different areas of study and life circumstances. Learning is different then memorizing. It is especially important to understand the concepts behind the subject matter when planning continue in a similar learning subject.
I am a licensed Social worker with tutoring experience in and out of college. I have the most experience in tutoring Algebra and other math. I have a student now that I am helping with AP English who has dyslexia. I enjoy watching her grammar skills increase and her overall understanding of the concepts develop. I am great with any age individual and have the patience it takes to work with any kind of student (special needs included).

I have extensive experience teaching all aspects of English, writing and composition, grammar, and literature. I have taught at University of New Mexico for the past seven years during my graduate work, and as a part-time instructor. In my teaching I commonly have worked one-on-one with students in the writing process. I am also a poet and creative writer with a broad base of knowledge in the humanities and arts to draw from. Though I have been working with college students, I love younger students as well and have much patience and adaptability with learning styles and levels.
I believe that listening is a key to helping a student succeed in a subject matter that may not come easily to them. Building on a child's strengths and trying to find a "way in" that makes sense to them is a good strategy. Using creativity and "outside the box" approaches to learning can help a child access ... read more

My style of teaching, especially with tutoring, is to find out what kind of learner my student is: tacit, oral, or verbal. Then the lesson style can be geared to that, while leading the student to become more aware of the other abilities and options. Also, it is imperative that students understand why they are learning what is being presented to them. Cause and effect leads to greater awareness and more objective, analytical, and critical thinking. Creating a reason and success in learning, making it practical and fun can lead any child to want to continue to grow in any area of interest, and tie that back to other skills which my not be so appealing at this point in their life.

Ideally, teaching styles should be individually tailored to the student's needs. The one-on-one environment of tutoring offers an exceptional opportunity to do this! The learning styles of students vary widely; however, I believe all students respond to an approach which includes kindness, respect, persistence, and the acceptance of the student as an individual. I believe in encouraging students to ask questions, and showing them where to find the answers.
Although it took me 15 years to obtain my B.S. in Business Management, I do not view that as a disadvantage. My teaching style is very open and I am very attuned to students’ inherent aptitudes, learning needs and ways of processing information. I am very approachable, responsive, personable and believe in affirming a student’s self-concept as a learner. Different approaches and conditions are often required for optimal learning, so I endorse multiple methods to acquire information and apply concepts. I am very interested in working with authentic assignments, homework requirements and projects attached to a student’s curriculum. A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching young children for over ten years. I have a BA in Speech Communication. My research proposal was published in the Research Handbook of the George Mason Communication Department in 1996. I have superior writing and editing skills. I have a Master's in Education.
I currently teach to a diverse, at-risk population employing a variety of teaching methods. Many of my students are considered "gifted" after I teach them. My first grade students have reached as high as the 4th-6th grade reading levels. After one year of instruction, one of my piano students (age 6) was deemed a child prodigy during the National Piano Guild at Christopher Newport University. Teaching and teaching parents to teach their own children is my gift and passion.
