The Student Comes First

I am a graduate of Tennessee Temple University, with experience tutoring at Tennessee Temple University, as well as University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, in various topics, including biodiversity, mathematics (up to pre-calculus), history, and American Sign Language. I continue to study in my personal time as many topics as possible, with the belief that a good tutor is firstly a good student.
I allow my teaching style to mold itself to each individual student, finding methods of communicating the information that best suit the learning style of my student. I favor a holistic approach to learning, believing that education should be of the whole person. If a student learns how a skill in his tutoring session can be applied in real life, then his or her perception of the subject may fundamentally improve.

From my experience as a tutor, confidence plays a big factor in the student’s ability to learn. When I am with a student, I constantly make sure that I am encouraging him/her and letting them know that they are doing a great job. Typically when I tutor a student, I go over the basic concepts and go over problems. I teach them what to look for and techniques used to approach any problem. Once they have built up that confidence in identifying an approach to a problem, I let them do one on their own. Essentially, I hold their hand through a problem until they feel confident and then I let them do one on their own. This method has worked and many students I have tutored have done well in their classes.

I love teaching and motivating people. Learning is very important for me and I believe that all people should receive a well rounded education. My style of teaching is that of discovery, where I help students learn from their mistakes. I like to take them down the path of self-discovery where they feel safe enough to make mistakes but, more importantly, learn how to think critically for themselves.
After completing my BBA in Marketing, I began teaching for the Bradford Union Career and Technical Center. A Little Bit About Me...

I decided at the age of 38 to attend college and earn my BA of Education degree. I have worked with and coached young people most of my life on a volunteer basis. Teaching has always been one of my passions. I have worked with students with learning disabilities in my eleven years of teaching. I have taught all the core subjects from grades 3-12. My favorite subject to teach/tutor is math. I enjoy seeing my students progress in their learning.
I like to challenge my students to reach their potential. I realize there is a fine line between challenging and frustrating my students. I like for my students to figure out math problems on their own as much as possible. My teaching style is to model new material, do guided practice, and independent practice. Hopefully by the time they finish this process they have mastered the particular lesson.

I am currently attending ITT-Technical Institute in Jacksonville, Florida for an A.S. in Computer Aided Drafting and Design. I currently have 72 completed credit hours. My college grade point average is currently 3.53. After finishing up my A.S. (six more credit hours), I plan to further my education at Ellis University online for a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Math and Physics. My entire senior year of high school, I tutored Algebra I and Algebra II students. While mathematics is probably my best subject, I know I would be very capable of tutoring English, the arts, and the sciences.
My greatest teaching philosophy (though I cannot claim it to be original), is "Can't never could!" This is such an important concept, for students as well as their teachers and tutors. Without belief in the student on the part of the teacher or tutor, I feel that a student is more likely to fail. I ... read more

I have loved working with children. I believe that showing a child they can be successful is very significant. Being positive with each child helps him/her to be able to try to do some things that they might otherwise not do. Gaining parent support for the child's learning is alao very important.
During my 34 years of experience, I have taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. Five years were spent working with children who achieved more by working with a smaller group and getting that all important one on one attention. All of us can learn new things. Some of us learn quickly and some of us take more time. We all have our own learning styles.

As a law school graduate, I was very much driven to achieve a high level of excellence in education. Having earned a bachelors degree followed by a Juris Doctor degree has enabled me to gain an in depth understanding in law, analysis, and especially composition and communication. In addition, I have learned extensive grammatical and expository skills due to preparing arguments, pleadings, motions, and judicial communiques in connection with my work experience as a legal assistant. Currently, in addition to being a small business owner in the community, I'd be delighted to further my passion for education and service as a tutor.
