Calculus I is one of my top subjects!

Hello, my name is Alan Reyes. I am a 19 year old college student attending the University of Florida for a BS in Physics and Astronomy. I have been playing chess for 5 years and have placed first in my section in the Jacksonville Open and two years running in the Sunshine Summer Opens 2013 and 2014. I also placed first in my section at the 2014 CFCC Tornado in Orlando. I am currently rated USCF 1705, based on 24 games. At the local Gainesville chess club, I can easily play with Class A players, and am considered among their ranks.
I am particularly looking for younger students, ranging from completely new to chess or the beginner looking to make advancements to the next level. I am prepared to offer the student plenty of my time and dedication; I will teach them the rules, standard opening theory, endgame theory, tactical concepts, and of course strategy in the middlegame. I believe in interactive teaching, where the student is as involved as the teacher. My satisfaction comes from watching students discover knowledge that they had previously thought unavailable. Every student can learn, and my purpose and goal is to help each student stretch as far as he or she is willing to go.
I have completed all requirements for a Master of Arts degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I have taught mathematics, computer applications, life skills, and other subjects at high school and community college levels in Colorado. A Little Bit About Me...

Physics has given me a new outlook on life, as it has given me the ability to look at the world from different perspectives. It had challenged me intellectually, as it caused me to think critically. Classes covering the full spectrum of physics such as electrodynamics, cosmology, stellar astrophysics, mechanics, thermal/statistical physics, optics, and quantum mechanics greater increased my curiosity in this field of study, as the possibilities of knowledge was endless. I decided that as a future scientist, I wanted to share my passion of physics and mathematics with others. During my undergraduate education, I tutored for four years at the Physics Tutorial center in my department where I taught students physics, math, and computer science.
From my experience as a tutor, confidence plays a big factor in the student’s ability to learn. When I am with a student, I constantly make ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I first began my love of teaching and tutoring children when I was a senior in high school. As the president of my school's National Honor Society, I began a tutoring program that enabled elementary and middle school students to be tutored by high school students. I continued to volunteer and tutor students while I earned my BS in Human and Organizational Development from Vanderbilt University. I am furthering my interest in education and working with children by pursuing my PhD in School Psychology at the University of Florida. I recently tutored a student in reading and writing for almost 1 year. I have always enjoyed math and science, so I would be happy to tutor a student in those areas in addition to reading and writing.
In my doctoral program, I am specializing in working with students with special needs and disabilities. Therefore, I strongly believe that every child can le ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Hands on teaching and kinesthetic learning are key to success in my mind. I love to involve the student's entire body in the learning process. From their senses to their movements to memory device techniques in the form of song or poem, using alternative methods of teaching seems more effective in the learning process.
As a Cum Laude graduate from the University of Florida, I continue to hold a high level of discipline in every aspect of life. Whether it be at work, at home, or at school, I feel it is imperative to do your best no matter what the situation. Upon graduation at the age of twenty, I began teaching undergraduate courses for UF. This was an honor, but it was not challenging enough.
