For my BA I decided in my Senior Year that I wanted to get a Masters Degree in Education so I switched my major last minute from Elementary Education with Emphasis in sciences and General Education to a understanding of how people learn. I have spent much of my time as an undergraduate mentoring underclassmen at ASU, not just to better understand their economics and political science classes, but also how to be a better, well-rounded students. As a Russian linguist I am qualified in a number of English linguistics subjects as well. Continuing that theme, I tutored my peers at law school in property, administrative and contracts law. I’ve been found to relate to well to fellow students and those younger than me. I have always enjoyed tutoring students and seeing them "get" the subjects we are touching on. The look on their face during this moment is priceless. I fully understand that everyone learns things in different ways. While one student may be able to memorize and understand facts one way, say by repetition, another student may learn the information by understanding the background and context that it comes from. I am very patient and flexible with students and realize that if they do not understand the material that it is not their fault, but rather I need to try a different approach with them. A good education is not only valuable in life, but I feel that students gain self confidence when they see their grades improve and they actually understand their class work.
