A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching students is a passion and an art. I approach each situation by trying to understand what stress factors are experienced by the students, as well as how they need to be approached to learn. Some students need to have a direct approach, others need to try on their own and then step by step correct their mistakes to both build up confidence for doing well and understand where they went wrong. I strive to make sure the student understands the process and not just memorizes the answers.
For my BA I decided in my Senior Year that I wanted to get a Masters Degree in Education so I switched my major last minute from Elementary Education with Emphasis in sciences and General Education to a understanding of how people learn. Growing up with four younger sisters, I have learned the valuable skills of patience and understanding. I received my B.S. in physics and went on to work at a Community College tutoring math. I enjoyed this work immensely and received excellent reviews from the students. While working at the college I also tutored middle school and high school students privately. In High School I took a class on Society and the Child which involved tutoring english and math two days a week for a fourth grade class. I plan on returning to school in 2010 to obtain a Masters in Secondary Educaton, with my focus on Math and Science Education.

I have always enjoyed tutoring students and seeing them "get" the subjects we are touching on. The look on their face during this moment is priceless. I fully understand that everyone learns things in different ways. While one student may be able to memorize and understand facts one way, say by repetition, another student may learn the information by understanding the background and context that it comes from. I am very patient and flexible with students and realize that if they do not understand the material that it is not their fault, but rather I need to try a different approach with them.
