A Little Bit About Me...

First, and foremost, I believe that effective learning is both fun and relevant. I have always been able to make a game of it and to make it both interesting and challenging to others. My goal is never to teach them a rote solution, but to challenge them to think about the concepts and have then tell me the answers. This builds their confidence and solidifies their learning experience. I find that if they understand how a concept was derived in the first place, they seldom forget that story and therefore have learned something that will stay with them for a live time. I prefer to use the Socratic Method and draw the information from my students. Again, I think it is best if they THINK rather than learn. Over time I see all my students (and all our five daughters) have responded well to this approach.

Some students need to have a direct approach, others need to try on their own and then step by step correct their mistakes to both build up confidence for doing well and understand where they went wrong. I received my B.S. in physics and went on to work at a Community College tutoring math. I enjoyed this work immensely and received excellent reviews from the students. While working at the college I also tutored middle school and high school students privately. In High School I took a class on Society and the Child which involved tutoring english and math two days a week for a fourth grade class. I plan on returning to school in 2010 to obtain a Masters in Secondary Educaton, with my focus on Math and Science Education.

I have always enjoyed tutoring students and seeing them "get" the subjects we are touching on. The look on their face during this moment is priceless. I fully understand that everyone learns things in different ways. While one student may be able to memorize and understand facts one way, say by repetition, another student may learn the information by understanding the background and context that it comes from. I am very patient and flexible with students and realize that if they do not understand the material that it is not their fault, but rather I need to try a different approach with them.
