My comments on tutoring Elementary Social Studies : I taught Social studies in the public school system. Even though I consider this to be an exciting subject, students are often bored by the subject matter. Especially something like longitude and latitude lines. To increase their interest on a beautiful Spring day I took them, a basketball, a globe and a piece of chalk outside to the basketball court. I drew a few lines and numbers on the court while the watched and wondered what I was doing. Then I split them up into teams. We played "around the world" When a student made a shot from one of the numbered lines they had to find the corresponding longitude and latitude line on the globe to get the point for their team. Word got around the school fast. As each class rotated in they were excited to be there and by the end of that chapter, I'm very proud to say that is the very 1st year every single one of those students passed that chapter test with at least a B. It's all a matter of creative teaching and that is what I do best.
Creative teaching for a life time love of learning. I gather everything at my disposal to work with my students and teach to their particular style of learning. I have used basketball to teach social studies. Vegetables to teach science. Peanuts cereal and even M & M's to teach math. A lecture is not always the best method of teaching, but that is what they get in the classroom. A tutor has more flexibility.
