My first major mentoring/teaching experience occurred in college when I began leading study groups and eventually organizing tutoring sessions with a number of my fellow English, Calculus, and Physics students. I then obtained a position as a youth counselor with the YMCA and quickly moved up to Site Coordinator where I was in charge of my own after school care group, including being in charge of organizing activities and managing youth counselors. I love working with Middle School and High School students. I believe all students can learn Math, no matter how much difficulty they've had in the past. I first assess where they are at and where their particular difficulty is. Usually the difficulty has to do with basics that they forgot or never understood in the first place. I work on this first before moving on to more difficult concepts. I have had much success with this approach. I always try to make the students feel that they CAN do it, no matter what.
