A Little Bit About Me...

My first major mentoring/teaching experience occurred in college when I began leading study groups and eventually organizing tutoring sessions with a number of my fellow English, Calculus, and Physics students. I then obtained a position as a youth counselor with the YMCA and quickly moved up to Site Coordinator where I was in charge of my own after school care group, including being in charge of organizing activities and managing youth counselors. Most recently I underwent PADI Divemaster training where I had real world experience teaching and assisting PADI Open Water students with classroom, confined water, and open water training.
My style tends to range based on who I am trying to teach, and I suppose is most accurately labeled as adaptive. I understand that different people learn things in different ways, and so I try to accommodate that with my teaching. Fo ... read more

I recently graduated from Florida International University. I have been working as a tutor in mathematics for various levels, particularly college, since I started my mathematics degree program. Ever since I have been working as a tutor, at least part-time, to help those who have problems in mathematics succeed. Every time a student improves it is truly satisfying and I consider it an achievement.
I am passionate about mathematics and I enjoy teaching it. Various students have different styles of learning and it is only through individual exposure that I am able to find the right learning technique for any give student. Patient and faith in the students, however, are the most determining factors in teaching them.

More About This Tutor...

I love working with Middle School and High School students. I believe all students can learn Math, no matter how much difficulty they've had in the past. I first assess where they are at and where their particular difficulty is. Usually the difficulty has to do with basics that they forgot or never understood in the first place. I work on this first before moving on to more difficult concepts. I have had much success with this approach. I always try to make the students feel that they CAN do it, no matter what.
After I graduated from UM I interned to become an Architect but didn't like it as much as the study of it. Because of the extensive Math involved and my love of the subject, I decided to become a Math teacher. I worked for 9 years at the Middle School level and this is my second year working at the High School level. I have tutored students on and off for the past 3 years.

I began teaching at the age of 17+ before attending college. My entire career has been principally teaching and academic administration. My students have consistently expressed praise at the approach that I take. To begin with, I believe that the needs of the student are paramount. Imparting the material to the student requires an understanding of their level of readiness; as a result I always begin by attempting to establish past experience. Once this has been done I then outline objectives, however students are allowed to participate at every stage, thus there is ongoing interaction. Questions and answers, followed by discussion are used, and no effort is spared to ensure that students learn.
My academic training includes Structural Engineering, Construction Management and Industrial/Vocational Education. I have only the dissertation outstanding for completing the PhD i ... read more

When you are in charge of a group, you need to make sure that group overall has to succeed. While you may want to have everyone in the group to get A’s on all of their assignments, as a teacher, you need to be practical. Like a workshop in a factory or the support staff in a law firm, a classroom is filled with individuals who have different strengths and weaknesses. These differences may show that certain students learn and absorb knowledge in different ways. I think my ability to use a student’s strengths to succeed may ensure a student to strive for high academic achievement. This ability to see a person’s certain talents may also have this student succeed in learning a subject. One example I can recall is when I was in the Navy, I had to train a new shipmate, fresh out of boot camp, to learn the ship’s engineering systems. Traditional methods of pure memorization from a lectu ... read more

I first begin by determining what areas of a students particular subject do they know and which areas are they struggling with so we can begin to target those areas they are struggling with by focusing on which concepts the students have a particularly hard time grasping. A lot of times the real problem is that the student has never had someone take the time and personal attention that student needs to explain certain concepts to the extent they may need to understand certain basic principles. I understand that different students learn in different ways and at different paces. Everyone has different learning capabilities, so I am very patient with all of my students.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe my objective when leading an organized course or when tutoring is not to teach but to facilitate the building of knowledge and the development of skills in each and every one of my students. I have received many satisfactions when my students are able to do by themselves what was previously a difficult, almost impossible, problem to solve. I have the firm belief that students have to work hard to learn and it is my job to stimulate them to do so to obtain as reward a higher level of knowledge and skills to problem solving.
I have been teaching since I was studying at the University my engineering studies, and have been doing this without interruption. My experience is at different educational levels, from teaching illiterate adults to read and write to tutoring Ph. D. dissertations. Presently I continue teaching at various colleges and universities and dedicate time to ... read more

An important lesson I learned is that every child is different. This is the most important fact to realize when attempting to teach a child. The most important traits that every teacher can have are patience and adaptability. It is my belief that every child can achieve academic success if they are able to find a link to the material that they are learning. My goal as a teacher is to relate to your child and help your child relate to the material that he/she is learning. Ultimately, your child will find studying much more enjoyable.
Throughout my educational career I have always found myself to have a very healthy appetite for knowledge. It was this drive that lead me to earn both a Master’s in Engineering and Bachelor’s of Science with a double major in Engineering and Economics. My desire to learn did not rest solely within the sciences. While in school, I took several classes in ... read more

Being pre-med with a strong interest in Pediatrics, I have a desire to work with children. This can be seen from my numerous volunteer activities at locations such as: the Ronald McDonald House, Shands Pediatric Specialty Clinic and Junior Achievement. I am patient and easy going and understand that some students require more time and instruction to learn. In the end, I feel that all students are capable of learning if the teacher is willing to explore different techniques until he/she finds one that works with that student. I also feel that it is important for the student to be able to relate to his/her teacher. In this regard, I am a very well-rounded individual with a varied background and feel like I can relate to most people. Being a teacher is making a connection with a student and truly caring about his/her educational well-being.
